Hello everyone, I am currently planning a renovation of my IKEA Hemnes shelving unit and want to customize it. I am wondering which tools are best suited for remodeling the IKEA Hemnes to achieve precise and clean results without unnecessarily damaging the material. I invite you to share your experiences, especially which tools have proven reliable for different steps (e.g., disassembly, resizing, surface treatment). Thanks for your tips!

I know how frustrating renovation projects can be, especially when you don’t have the right tools. It’s important to take your time and be realistic about what you can manage yourself. A cordless drill saves a lot of effort, but when working with wood, it’s also worth investing in good sandpaper – it often makes the biggest visual difference after cutting.

I agree with you. For me, besides the cordless drill, the jigsaw was a real game changer. Especially when cutting out openings in the Hemnes shelf, I initially lacked experience. However, if you use the right saw blade, it works well.

For remodeling HEMNES, you need a cordless drill, a fine jigsaw, and sandpaper.

Additionally, I would like to point out that the right cordless drill should ideally have a torque-limiting setting. This prevents screws from being driven too deeply, which can damage particleboard or MDF panels.

Furthermore, good quality fine to medium grit sandpaper (grits 120-220) should be used, as coarse sanding can quickly damage the surface of HEMNES furniture.

Hello everyone,

I would like to contribute to the topic with a small tutorial approach:

1. Dismantling: Ideally, use a cordless screwdriver with a Torx bit for dismantling. This saves time and ensures precision.

2. Cutting: For cutting softwood (pine), it is better to use a fine-toothed jigsaw blade. Coarser blades tend to cause unsightly splintering.

3. Surface preparation: Always sand in the direction of the grain, starting with grit 120 and finishing with grit 220 or finer.

4. Drilling and new fastenings: Use sharp wood drill bits and apply light pressure to avoid splitting the material.

5. Additional tips: A sharp pencil point helps for clear marking. Always measure before sawing or drilling—measuring twice is better than cutting once!

I hope this makes your renovation easier!

I would like to add that depending on what you want to modify, specialized tools might also be useful. For example, if you want to change hinges or install new fittings, I recommend a good spirit level and possibly a cordless jigsaw kit with various blades. These will help you carry out more specific tasks more effectively and save time on rework. Good luck!

This is a very good tip that helped me achieve a really smooth surface during my last renovation. At first, I was unsure because I thought it might be something only professionals do, but it’s really worth it for anyone who wants a high-quality finish.
