Hello everyone,

I am currently planning to modify my IKEA Hemnes furniture piece to make it more flexible, in order to better adapt the storage space and functionality to my needs. I am wondering which tools are especially useful or necessary to efficiently modify the Hemnes carcass and parts such as doors, shelves, or drawers without causing unnecessary effort or material damage.

I am interested in both traditional tools and handy gadgets that make the modification easier, especially when drilling, screwing, and possibly cutting. Perhaps you also have experience with tools specifically suited for working on IKEA furniture or tips for special steps in the Hemnes modification. Thanks in advance!

Hello trafi!

It’s great that you’re thinking about making your Hemnes more flexible! 😃 For me, a cordless drill and a good drill bit are absolutely essential. The cordless drill especially makes screwing much easier, and with the right drill bit set, you can pre-drill precisely to prevent the wood from splitting.

I also recommend small clamps to hold parts together while screwing. And if you want to add a new row of holes, templates (or a dowel drilling system) are really useful!

Don’t forget a fine-grit sandpaper or a file to smooth the cut edges. Good luck with your modification – you’ve got this! 💪

I agree with that, but I would like to add that not every tool is equally recommendable. A cheap cordless drill without torque settings can quickly cause damaged screws or enlarged holes.

For precise modifications to the Hemnes, I would also recommend a step drill bit, especially if you plan to work with wooden dowels. The typical hardware store sets include many bits but are not always optimized for laminated MDF or particleboard components.

Furthermore, it’s important to measure carefully during preparation and use a center punch to mark the drilling points accurately, ensuring precise guiding of the drill bit.

1. Cordless drill with adjustable torque
2. Wood drill bits 3-6mm (0.12-0.24 inches)
3. Clamps for securing
4. Sandpaper for fine work

With these, you are well prepared.

Hey trafi!

I love these kinds of DIY renovations! 😄 A tip from me: besides a cordless screwdriver and a drill, you should definitely get or make a drilling template to ensure precise and repeatable hole placement. IKEA furniture often comes with pre-drilled holes, but when you make adjustments, precision is priceless.

Also, self-adhesive felt pads are great if you want to make moving parts or cabinets flexible later, especially those that don’t hang or rest easily.

And don’t forget a saw! A compact jigsaw with a fine blade would be ideal if you need to cut any parts.

Have fun transforming your space—you’ll be amazed at what you can do with Hemnes! 💥🛠

It is interesting that many here only follow the traditional approach and list tools without mentioning the aspect of modularity or professional furniture processing.

That’s a good point, but I would go further: a router with the appropriate bits can work wonders to create clean and durable drill holes, edges, or recesses.

Additionally, using a try square or miter gauge is worthwhile to prepare precise cuts. I often see that people damage rather than improve their furniture during the renovation of the Hemnes due to rough handling. Anyone who wants true flexibility must invest—not only in tools but also in know-how.
