Hello everyone,

I am currently planning to modify my IKEA Hemnes furniture piece to make it more flexible, in order to better adapt the storage space and functionality to my needs. I am wondering which tools are especially useful or necessary to efficiently modify the Hemnes carcass and parts such as doors, shelves, or drawers without causing unnecessary effort or material damage.

I am interested in both traditional tools and handy gadgets that make the modification easier, especially when drilling, screwing, and possibly cutting. Perhaps you also have experience with tools specifically suited for working on IKEA furniture or tips for special steps in the Hemnes modification. Thanks in advance!

I often see that people spoil rather than improve Hemnes furniture during renovations due to rough handling.

I completely agree! In my experience, Hemnes furniture is very straightforward in its construction: you can immediately tell if you’re working imprecisely or using the wrong tools.

My advice: definitely use high-quality wood drill bits and, above all, a cordless drill with variable speed control. Nothing is slower than a cheap drill that overheats and damages MDF or chipboard by running at too high a speed.

A quick renovation with the right tools gives you the chance to carry out your project with attention to detail and without frustration!

Hello everyone! 😄

I just wanted to mention that when working with Hemnes, a multitool (oscillating saw) can be really useful. Especially for small adjustments—like trimming cabinet doors or cutting out sections of side panels for pipes or electrical outlets—such a tool is great to have without needing to bring out the big equipment.

Also, a simple flathead and Phillips screwdriver with an ergonomic handle can sometimes be more enjoyable to use for repairs than a cordless drill, especially if you only need to tighten or adjust something occasionally.

Don’t forget: a good helmet or at least a dust mask when producing sawdust, because MDF dust is no joke. 😉

Wishing you all the best with your renovation projects!

Hello trafi,

For me, a spirit level is an essential tool for any Hemnes modification.😃

Why? Because it’s really important that the cabinet stands perfectly straight afterwards, especially if you’re adding extra feet or casters.

I also find a small set of various screwdrivers handy, since you often need to loosen smaller screws that a cordless drill doesn’t grip well. And if you want to adjust doors, hex keys (Allen wrenches) are sometimes required.

As an addition, I recommend securing the drill holes with wood glue for repairs to keep everything stable. 👍

Good luck with your project!
