Judasren6424 Apr 2019 08:17Hello everyone, I have a fairly specific question regarding the installation of IKEA Metod kitchen cabinet doors. My goal is to mount the doors so that they close as quietly and smoothly as possible, without compromising stability or alignment. So far, I am using the supplied hinges, but the closing is often somewhat loud, which is disruptive in my open-plan kitchen. Are there any technically proven methods or specific hinge adjustments, possibly additional dampers, that you would recommend? Maybe you also have tips on how to install the doors so that the door stop is softer or less abrupt. I am open to all suggestions, including alternative fastenings or supplementary components that promote a quiet closing mechanism. Thanks in advance!
Hey, great question, I can totally relate! 🙂 I also had trouble with noisy Metod doors – here are a few tips that worked really well for me:
- Use soft-close dampers (soft-close mechanisms). IKEA offers these as accessories, which replace the standard hinges’ dampers.
- Check the tightness of the screws on the hinges during installation, as slight looseness can increase rattling.
- Adjust the doors perfectly: vertically, horizontally, and in depth – if the door isn’t aligned properly, it will close with more noise.
For me, installing soft-close hinges made all the difference – completely silent! If you want, I can write you a short guide on how to best install the dampers!

1. First, check the type of hinge: Standard Metod hinges usually have a drilling for soft-close adapters. If none are installed, I recommend the IKEA soft-close adapter.
2. Remove the door and attach the soft-close dampers directly to the hinges according to the instructions.
3. Reinstall the door, paying close attention to precise alignment, as a poorly adjusted hinge causes uneven pressure and thus noise.
4. Adjust the closing angle and the gap to the cabinet opening; exact settings ensure smoother closing.
5. Optional: Additional door dampers, mounted as small buffer elements inside the cabinets, can further reduce noise.
Please avoid using regular glue or temporary rubber pads, as they can cause long-term damage. If you have any more questions, just let me know.

Use soft-close dampers. IKEA offers these as accessories, which are installed on the hinge instead of the standard dampers. Is that really the only solution? I ask because soft-close mechanisms certainly add extra costs and are just an addition to the actual mounting system. It might also be worth considering whether the cause lies in the type of fastening or the hardness of the cabinet materials. From my experience, some doors close louder because the door weight isn’t properly matched to the hinge or the doors have been incorrectly adjusted. How exactly do the hinge adjustments work with Metod? Aren’t there screw tolerances that allow you to mechanically soften the closing as well?

One could also consider whether the cause lies in the type of fastening or the material hardness of the carcasses. This is an important point. Especially with Metod carcasses made of particleboard, the connection with hinges results in slight give under load. This means impacts are not absorbed well, which causes rattling.
Furthermore, the closing angle determined by the hinge position is crucial. A small difference in angle can make the impact significantly harder or softer. The adjustment of Metod hinges allows for fine horizontal, vertical, and depth settings, which should be done carefully.
It is also recommended to install rubber buffers on the carcass, which significantly reduce noise transmission.
