Hello everyone, I’m currently considering how to best use the IKEA Besta system as a storage solution in my home office. My main concern is how to arrange the different components effectively to ensure enough space for documents, office supplies, possibly tech equipment, and cable management. It would also be helpful to know which doors, drawers, or open shelves work best to maintain both organization and an appealing look. Does anyone have tips or experience using Besta for office setups? How do you organize your work materials within the units? I look forward to your ideas and recommendations!

This is a very practical question that affects many of us working from home.

I use BESTA in my home office and find the combination of closed units with doors and open shelves especially useful. This way, frequently used items are easy to reach, while files and unsightly cables can be hidden in the closed cabinets – keeping the room neater and more organized.

A small tip: Make sure to pay attention to the depth of the units so they fit your desk and workspace. For some designs, a depth of 38 cm (15 inches) is helpful to accommodate larger folders.

It also helps me to measure how much space you really need before buying and decide whether you want to position the units vertically or horizontally. A bit of planning saves you a lot of frustration later!

I’m happy to add a few structured tips on how to ideally use IKEA BESTÅ as a storage solution in a home office:

- Start with a thorough analysis of your storage needs: What items need to be stored and where? Files, electronics, everyday objects?
- Choose modules with variable heights and widths to create flexible layouts. BESTÅ offers 1x1, 2x1, or 2x2 units that can be combined in any configuration.
- Use a mix of open and closed elements: open shelves for books or decorations, doors or drawers for cables, documents, or less attractive items.
- For cable management, back panels with cutouts or additional cable channels that you can install yourself work particularly well.
- For fronts, you can choose between doors, drawers, and flaps—drawers provide quick access, while doors keep things tidy and create a calm appearance.

A common mistake is overloading the modules or not maintaining consistent dimensions, which can make the overall look untidy. Also, pay attention to securing the units to the wall for added safety.

If you like, I can share some example combinations and use cases from my experience.

I think BESTA is amazing for the office!! 😊

I combined different small drawer units with open shelves and chose white fronts, which creates a bright and friendly atmosphere.

My tip: complement the cabinets with storage boxes – this really helps to keep a lot of clutter under control. Small hooks or magnets on the side of the units are also useful for neatly organizing cables.

Just give it a try, the system is very versatile and makes setting up really fun!

Interesting, but I find that using only the standard modules is somewhat limited in practicality when you have individual needs. The BESTA system is versatile, but it often lacks flexibility in depth or interior layouts, which you can find more easily in specialized office systems.

Furthermore, how do you handle weight capacity? Many users report that the shelves are not ideal for heavy equipment. How have you addressed this? Personally, I am cautious when something is too bulky or large – in such cases, an additional desk drawer unit or specialized material drawers might be better.

And regarding the appearance: I noticed that the design is quite simple, which can be practical for some, but rather dull for others – especially without personal customization through color or handles. What are your thoughts on this?

That’s a very good point, thank you! My worktop is about 60 cm (24 inches) deep, so I think the BESTA units with a depth of 38 cm (15 inches) could fit recessed next to the desk. I want to avoid the storage space protruding too much into the room.

Actually, I’m unsure about heavy equipment — sometimes printers or scanners, which can be quite heavy. Does anyone use special reinforcements or support bases for the units when they’re used as shelving?

Also, I generally want to create a calm and as tidy a visual impression as possible — I’m considering whether doors might be more practical than open shelves.
