Hello everyone,

I got a Billy bookshelf from IKEA and wanted to reposition the shelves. So far, I have only found methods that require tools to remove the shelves. My question is: Is there a way to remove the shelves of the BILLY bookshelf without any tools? Really without using a screwdriver, hammer, or anything similar? If yes, how exactly does it work? I don’t want to damage anything or bend the brackets, so I’m interested in practical and gentle tips. Thanks in advance!

With BILLY shelves, the shelves are usually supported only by small metal pins. To remove them without tools, simply carefully lift the shelf upwards and then tilt it out. Do not use too much force, as this can bend the pins.

Hello,

I would like to provide a brief guide:

1. First, you should unload the shelf as much as possible by removing all items placed on it.
2. The BILLY shelves rest on small metal or plastic dowels (depending on the design) that fit into holes on the side panels.
3. Grip the shelf board at the front edge, gently lift it slightly upward, but especially pull it forward (tilt it a bit). This usually releases the connection without the need for tools.

Common mistakes:
- Using force often causes the supports to bend.
- Do not try to pry the shelves out directly from the side.

Summary: pulling slightly upward while tilting forward should be sufficient.

That’s a good description! 🙂 I always feel like the BILLY shelf is trying to show us that assembling furniture can also be a small workout: pull, push, tilt – a little choreography. 😄 But seriously: be gentle, no force needed, and it works perfectly without any tools.

Another important point is the production year version of the shelf: older BILLY models sometimes have different dowel mechanisms that may require a slight twist or an additional pull. If you notice a tight fit, try repeating the whole process very carefully with minimal force; you might also be able to slightly tilt or rotate the shelf to improve accessibility. Tools are not necessarily required if you are patient.

Thank you for your quick and helpful responses.

I have one more question: What if the metal pins are already a bit stuck due to age or frequent repositioning? Can the shelves still be removed without tools, or is there a risk that the supports might break or bend? I definitely want to avoid damaging the wood, as that could affect the color integrity and stability.
