Hello everyone,

I got a Billy bookshelf from IKEA and wanted to reposition the shelves. So far, I have only found methods that require tools to remove the shelves. My question is: Is there a way to remove the shelves of the BILLY bookshelf without any tools? Really without using a screwdriver, hammer, or anything similar? If yes, how exactly does it work? I don’t want to damage anything or bend the brackets, so I’m interested in practical and gentle tips. Thanks in advance!

What happens if the metal pins have become a bit stuck due to age or frequent repositioning? Is it still possible to remove the shelves without tools, or is there a risk that the brackets might break or bend?

If the brackets are very tight, there is indeed a higher risk that they might break or bend if pulled out forcefully. My recommendation: If you want to avoid using tools to gently loosen them, try warming the shelf slightly (for example, with a hairdryer) so the material expands a bit. After that, you can often work more effectively by gently tilting and pulling without a screwdriver. For very tight-fitting parts, placing padding underneath the shelf can help prevent pressure marks.

Common mistake: Applying excessive force often causes the brackets to bend.

Haha, yes – the piece of furniture quickly turns into an unintended art object. 😉

I would add this: bending the brackets by using too much force is unfortunately very common. It’s better to work slowly and take short breaks if needed, then you can handle any shelf. Here’s another tip: sometimes it helps to slightly support the metal pins with your other hand, basically “freeing” them while removing the shelf.
