Hello everyone,

I have a small problem with my IKEA Metod kitchen hinges. They are increasingly squeaking when opening and closing the doors, which is quite annoying over time. The hinges themselves seem to be visually fine and still firmly attached, but that disturbing noise is just there.

I have been considering whether it makes sense to completely remove the hinges to clean or lubricate them, but I’m unsure which type of lubricant is best to avoid grease stains on the edge of the door. Also, I wonder if it’s possible to adjust the hinges differently to eliminate the squeaking.

How do you approach repairing squeaky IKEA Metod hinges? What steps make sense, and which lubricant do you use? Do you need special tools for that? I appreciate any tips and tricks that help solve the problem cleanly and long-term, without having to buy new parts right away.

Hey Mauon! 😄

First of all, don’t worry – squeaky metal hinges are a classic kitchen issue.

I’d definitely recommend using a dry graphite spray or a silicone spray, and don’t use too much. They attract less dirt and dust than oil or grease, so your kitchen fronts stay cleaner. Just spray the hinges lightly, open and close the door a few times, and the noise usually disappears.

Tools? At most, you’ll need a Phillips screwdriver if you want to remove the doors briefly to get better access. Sometimes, a slight adjustment of the hinges helps – just loosen the screws on the mount a bit, align the door, and tighten them again.

Good luck, you can easily handle this! 😉

Interesting approach, but I wonder if that is always the best solution.

Graphite does have advantages when it comes to preventing dust from sticking, but is it really effective in the long run? The squeaking problem can also be caused by overly tight or insufficiently lubricated metal parts, which might respond better to lubrication with liquid oil. Additionally, graphite requires occasional reapplication over time because it tends to dissipate or spread with frequent use.

Personally, I prefer using a fine sewing machine oil for all metal hinges, as it penetrates well, lubricates effectively, and does not attract dirt—provided it is applied carefully to avoid any drips on the surfaces.

I would also be interested to know if there are specific maintenance instructions or material recommendations for IKEA Metod hinges. Are there any manufacturer guidelines that should be followed?

Thanks for the tip, karus66. The suggestion of using fine sewing machine oil does sound sensible, especially because of its good penetration.

As a word of caution, I would add that it’s important to use only a very small amount since the doors are usually quite close together and grease stains can become very noticeable.

Regarding your experiences with adjusting the Metod hinges – what is the proper way to approach this?

I’ve heard that the screws on the hinge should be loosened slightly, but I think this is a step not everyone should attempt without risking the door ending up misaligned.

Does anyone have a step-by-step recommendation or experience on what to start with – lubrication or adjustment?

Regarding the topic "How to fix squeaky IKEA Metod hinges," here is a structured approach that has proven effective:

- Initial assessment: Analyze the squeaking to identify the cause. It is usually due to insufficient or old lubrication.

- Tools: Phillips screwdriver, sewing machine oil or silicone oil, and if needed, a fine cloth.

- Cleaning: First, carefully wipe the hinges to avoid applying dust and dirt along with the lubricant.

- Applying lubricant: Apply a small amount of oil directly to the moving joint by spraying or dripping. It is better to apply sparingly and precisely.

- Function test: Open and close the door several times to distribute the oil evenly.

- Adjustment: If squeaking persists, check whether the door is properly aligned. Loosen the screws at the hinge base, adjust slightly, and retighten.

- Final step: Remove any excess oil to prevent stains.

Be cautious with oils containing grease, as they attract dirt. Sewing machine oil works well, as does silicone oil, which stays cleaner.

If the noise remains despite these steps, the hinges may be worn out and should be replaced.

As a reminder: Never use WD-40 or heavier greases – while they may temporarily reduce squeaking, they cause dirt buildup and faster wear in the long term.
