Hello everyone,

I am currently working on a DIY project involving the Ikea Besta shelving system and plan to install a hidden charging station within it. My idea is to integrate the charging station so that my smartphones and other devices can be charged discreetly, without chargers and cables being visible.

Now my questions for you: What is the best way to build such a hidden charging station into a Besta unit without significantly affecting its stability or design? Which materials or accessories are suitable to enable charging through the furniture (e.g., wireless charging or with special openings for cables)? And are there important electrical safety considerations I should definitely keep in mind, especially regarding the integration of power outlets or Qi charging pads in the furniture?

I’m really looking forward to your experiences and tips—preferably detailed, as I have never done this myself and want to prepare well for my project.

I would suggest routing recesses for Qi charging pads into the top panel, running the charging cables neatly to the back—ideally using cable channels. To maintain stability, avoid removing material from the top surface, and choose a charging pad that is as slim as possible.

For wireless charging in the Ikea BESTA, a Qi charging pad that doesn’t overheat and has a slim profile is suitable. You can cover the top panel with a thin laminate or acrylic sheet, as long as it contains no metallic elements that could block the signal.

Regarding safety: Make sure to use the charger with certified components (CE mark) and properly insulate all cables. It’s best to use outlets with surge protection and avoid loose cables inside the furniture to prevent short circuits.

If you want to plan an opening for cables, also consider the pre-made drill holes or back panel cutouts included with the BESTA. Stay flexible, as cables and devices still need adequate ventilation.

I agree but would like to add: Integrating a charging station into furniture is very convenient but also comes with risks, especially due to cable clutter or overheating. Hidden charging stations tend to dissipate heat less effectively. Therefore, I would definitely recommend using a temperature sensor or at least regularly checking if the area becomes warm.

Additionally, I see many DIY projects using cheap Qi charging pads that often break quickly or can become hazardous. Invest in high-quality modules and ideally use ready-certified charging station modules designed for furniture integration. If needed, cables can be neatly routed through grooves or special cable channels in the BESTA unit – this is safer than fully gluing or sealing everything.

My recommendation: Use modular solutions that can be easily replaced if necessary, and avoid modifying the furniture to the point where maintenance becomes impossible.
