Hello everyone, I have a question about replacing the drawers in IKEA Brimnes furniture, especially in dressers and sideboards. How exactly does the drawer replacement work if you want to replace only one damaged drawer, for example? Do you need special tools or specific steps to remove and reinstall the drawer without damaging the overall structure? I ask because the drawers often run on a special rail system, and I want to avoid bending or damaging anything. Are there also any tips on what to pay particular attention to when inserting the replacement drawer to ensure it runs smoothly? I look forward to your experiences and advice, including common pitfalls during removal. Thank you in advance!

To replace the drawer, simply pull it out completely and then press the metal latches on the sliding rails to unlock it. After that, it can be lifted out entirely. To install the replacement drawer, place it on the rails and press down lightly until it clicks into place. No tools are required.

That is basically correct, but to be precise, Brimnes drawers use a specific metal sliding system that works slightly differently from classic full-extension slides. It is important to fully open the drawer first to access the release mechanisms on the sides of the slides – these are usually small tabs or levers that need to be gently pressed inward.

- From there, carefully pull the drawer out while slightly lifting it to detach it from the slides.
- Make sure the metal tabs are fully pressed down, because if the drawer isn’t completely unlocked, the materials on the slide or drawer can get damaged.
- When reinserting, take your time and place the drawer exactly onto the slides, then slowly push it back until it stops, applying slight pressure on the tabs so they lock into place.

What often goes wrong is that the tabs are not pressed enough or overlooked entirely, causing the drawer bottom or sides to scrape and impair movement. Usually, no tools are needed, but a flashlight or good lighting helps to see the mechanism well.

I’m curious: Which Brimnes furniture pieces do you have exactly? Some models vary slightly, for example, in drawer depth and types of slides.

That’s a very good question, as many people unintentionally affect the smoothness when replacing drawers. Here are a few details I can share based on my experience with Brimnes furniture:

- Make sure that both the sliding rails inside the furniture and the contact surfaces of the drawer are clean and free of dust or debris. Small particles or even coarse dust can significantly hinder movement.
- Check the narrow tabs on the locking mechanism before installation to ensure they move fully and smoothly.
- When installing, it helps to tilt the drawer slightly upwards (lift it a bit) to slide it into the runners. If the drawer is inserted completely flat, it often won’t glide smoothly.
- If replacing the drawer, also verify that it is identical to the original one – even small dimensional differences in newer batches can cause fitting problems.

If possible, try inserting the drawer loosely first and check if it moves easily before pushing it in completely. If it’s your first time replacing it, allow some extra time and be patient; these small mechanisms can sometimes be tricky.
