Hello everyone, I have several Ikea Brimnes drawer dressers at home that I want to modify to be more child-friendly. My main concern is making the drawers safer, as my toddler often tries to open them fully and risks tipping them over or getting fingers caught. Does anyone have experience or proven methods for modifying BRIMNES drawers to be child-safe (e.g., with soft-close mechanisms, child locks, or other measures) without losing their functionality? I am looking for practical tips, instructions, or product recommendations that are easy to implement. Thanks in advance!

Great collection of tips you’ve gathered! For me, a simple trick worked really well: never pull drawers out completely! Just install a stopper at the back using a felt pad or a small piece of wood. And if the child does pull, nothing bad happens! Simple measures, big impact!

Look forward to the sense of achievement!

I think a combination makes sense. Soft-close prevents slamming, and the lock prevents opening. Magnetic locks are durable and work quite well if you have the right key.

Thanks, that sounds logical and practical. I guess I will probably integrate both. Does anyone have a specific recommendation for soft-close adapters that can be installed on Brimnes drawers without major disassembly? And which magnetic child safety locks are particularly reliable here?

I had ordered the "Soft Stop Adapter" from a manufacturer that actually makes similar drawer slides. Installation was easy without major disassembly; you just need to pay attention to the size. I had good experiences with magnetic locks from brands that specifically recommend them for IKEA furniture. Definitely make sure the magnetic key card does not get lost during everyday use!

This is a simple yet effective method. It is important that the stop is securely fixed and cannot slip. For BRIMNES, it is recommended to fasten the wooden piece in a way that children cannot remove it.

In summary, I recommend the following systematic approach to make the BRIMNES drawers child-safe:

- Wall mounting of the chest of drawers to prevent tipping accidents
- Installation of soft-close dampers (if retrofit possible) or alternatively dampers on the cabinet sides
- Internal magnetic child locks to prevent full opening
- Mechanical stops (e.g., wooden blocks) as an additional safety measure
- Regular inspection of the installation to avoid wear and loosening

This combination provides the highest possible safety with acceptable everyday usability.

Thank you all for the helpful and sometimes very specific suggestions. I will try out the recommendations and report back here on how the combination of wall mounting, soft-close dampers, and magnetic locks performs. This topic is especially important when there are young children involved. If I come across any new questions, I’ll be happy to reach out again!
