Hello everyone,

I am currently facing the challenge of upgrading my Ikea Besta furniture for heavy-duty applications or at least adjusting the fasteners accordingly. My question is directed to those who have experience with screws specifically suitable for higher load capacities in Besta units:

Which screws are best for significantly increasing the load-bearing capacity of the furniture?

I have found partly conflicting information in various forums, for example regarding diameter, length, and material of the screws. It is important to me that the screws also fit the Ikea Besta construction (meaning they are not too thick or do not damage the material when fastened).

Additionally, it would be great if you could provide advice on suitable wall plugs or other reinforcements.

Thank you in advance!

This is indeed an important question, especially when planning to subject the furniture to higher loads. Personally, I have often had doubts because the screws provided by Ikea don’t always seem very sturdy.

Based on my own experience, I recommend using high-quality steel screws with a diameter of at least M6, if the project allows. However, you need to pay close attention to the length—I have often used 60 to 80 mm (2.4 to 3.1 inches) to ensure they penetrate the panels securely without causing damage.

And yes, the material must also be taken into account: with particleboard, caution is needed because screws that are too thick and long can cause the panels to split. Therefore, always screw in slowly and pre-drill if necessary.

I’m interested to hear how others handle this, especially whether anyone uses other manufacturing techniques or reinforcements to improve the load capacity of Ikea units.

That sums it up pretty well. To go a bit deeper into the topic: Basically, Ikea BESTA is made from particleboard, MDF, and sometimes melamine edges; this isn’t exactly ideal for heavy loads. The included screws are usually short screws (e.g., M4 or M5 around 30-40 mm (1-1.5 inches) long) and mainly designed for normal use.

- For heavy loads, I recommend at least M6 screws with 70-80 mm (3-3.1 inches) length, provided the holes are enlarged or reamed.
- Stainless steel A2 or galvanized steel screws improve corrosion resistance, which can be important near moisture.
- Pre-drilling is essential, and screw slowly, as Henry already mentioned, otherwise the panels will split.

An additional tip: If the furniture is anchored to the wall, use heavy-duty wall plugs (e.g., metal anchors or chemical anchors), which provide much better support than simple plastic plugs.

If you need more details: How will the furniture be positioned later, standing or hanging? Should the load mainly withstand vertical pressure or more tension forces? This makes a difference for screw selection.

P.S.: I have also used plywood panels as reinforcement to improve the bearing points. Of course, this is more of a DIY trick and may not always be suitable.

Exactly, M6 screws with 70mm or 80mm (2.8 or 3.1 inches). Important: pre-drill and screw in carefully, otherwise the panels may crack.

For anchors, metal anchors or expansion anchors work well if the furniture needs to be fixed to the wall.
