Hello everyone,

I am considering upgrading my IKEA KALLAX shelves with laminate doors, but I have a few questions and would appreciate some experience reports. Specifically, I am interested in how sturdy the attachable doors really are, whether the material quality differs from the original KALLAX doors, and how the installation process works overall – especially which tools are needed and how precise the mounting must be to achieve a clean look. It would also be useful to know if there have been any issues with load-bearing capacity or warping of the doors over time. If anyone has already done this, I would also like to know if the laminate doors are easy to clean and whether they might swell when exposed to moisture.

Thanks in advance for any helpful advice or firsthand tips!

The stability of the laminate doors largely depends on the quality of the hinges supplied by IKEA or the ones you use yourself. It is important that the screws are tightened securely; otherwise, the doors will wobble easily.

You can definitely notice a difference here: laminate tends to warp more easily in high humidity if it is made thin. Solid wood or MDF door panels are usually more dimensionally stable.

For installation, I recommend using a small spirit level, a cordless drill with appropriate bits, and patience when aligning the doors. Precise positioning will help avoid problems with closing the doors later on.

I attached laminate doors to my KALLAX shelving unit. Important: Always pre-drill all holes before screwing to avoid damaging the laminate.

Otherwise, the doors fit well, but you should choose the hinges carefully. Not all are suitable for thin laminate.

Hello!

It is important to check before retrofitting whether the laminate doors have a proper frame to keep them stable. Thin laminate is rather sensitive to stress at the edges.

Mounting on KALLAX usually works with the supplied hinges; sometimes you need to use washers or spacers, especially with thicker doors, to ensure the correct distance from the shelving unit.

Regarding warping: If you are working in a more humid room, expect slight changes in the material. Regularly checking the screws helps keep the doors stable.

Laminate surfaces are usually easy to clean, but I would avoid harsh cleaning agents. A damp cloth is sufficient.

If you want, I can also send you a brief guide on how to best plan the installation.

I just wanted to give some quick feedback since I recently installed laminate doors on my KALLAX unit as well. At first, I was quite unsure whether the doors would hold up over time or if something would go wrong.

After about two months, I did notice some slight play in the hinges, which I was able to fix with a bit of adjustment. It can be a bit frustrating having to tweak them every now and then, but I guess that’s normal with such lightweight materials.

I admit, sometimes I wished I had gone for the more expensive original doors, but the cost savings were definitely a plus. Another advantage is that the laminate surface is easy to wipe clean, which is great if you have pets.

I totally understand if you’re wondering whether it’s worth it. 😉 If you have any questions about adjusting the doors, I’m happy to help!

I can only agree with that. Precise work is really half the battle here.

I would add that a precision screwdriver, especially for the smaller screw heads found in laminate doors, often makes sense to avoid over-tightening.

Additionally, doors should always be tested multiple times after installation to ensure both opening and closing work smoothly without squeaking or jamming.
