bernhard466 Jan 2024 08:42Hello everyone,
I am planning to retrofit a soft-close system to the doors of my existing IKEA Metod kitchen fronts to enable smoother and quieter closing. My question is specifically: Are there any proven methods or particular soft-close hinges that can be easily installed on Metod doors without having to completely replace the original hinge?
Additionally, I am interested in how to adjust the soft-close function so that the door closes neither too fast nor too slow and is optimally dampened depending on the weight of the front. Are there any special tips or settings I should be aware of?
I look forward to your experiences and advice, especially regarding the effort involved and the tools that might be needed.

Hello bernhard46,
first of all, regarding your question about whether soft-close hinges can be installed without replacing the entire hinge: with IKEA Metod modules, retrofitting a soft-close system usually involves replacing the hinges. This is because the standard hinges do not have integrated damping, while the soft-close version has built-in damping components that require a different mechanism.
However, there are a few systems that can be mounted as add-on dampers, which typically clip onto the hinge cup. You should definitely check compatibility, as Metod hinges have quite specific geometry.
Regarding adjustment: most soft-close hinges have two key adjustment screws:
- One for door front alignment (left/right, up/down)
- One for adjusting the damping level, i.e., how strong or weak the braking effect is
The key to a good adjustment is to take your time and adjust gradually so that the door closing process is smooth but not too slow. Incorrect adjustment can cause unnatural movements or a hard slam.
Tools: usually a simple Phillips screwdriver is enough, in some cases an Allen key (hex key) is needed, which often comes with the hinges.
Have you already selected specific materials or hinges? Also, your door dimensions and weight would be helpful information to identify the suitable model.

Have you already selected specific materials or even hinges? Your door dimensions and weight would also be helpful to determine the appropriate model. Thank you, Filippo, that’s very helpful. At the moment, I have Metod fronts in lacquered white, 60cm (24 inches) wide, with an estimated weight of 9kg (20 lbs) per door. I’m leaning toward using the original IKEA soft-close hinges, as this should minimize the effort required for replacement and adjustment. My main goal is to achieve as uniform damping as possible, which also does not noticeably deteriorate due to temperature fluctuations.
Can you provide any information about the adjustability of the damping strength? Some hinges feature very fine-tunable mechanisms, while others only offer a fixed setting.
The original IKEA soft-close hinges from the Metod series offer reliable adjustability:
- The damping is factory preset and can only be adjusted slightly.
- The adjustment screw mainly affects the closing speed at the final point.
- For door weights around 9kg (20 lbs), the standard hinges are adequately sized.
For a more customized adjustment, I recommend looking for hinges with variable damping, although this usually involves higher costs and more complex installation.
