Hello everyone,
I am planning to retrofit a soft-close system to the doors of my existing IKEA Metod kitchen fronts to enable smoother and quieter closing. My question is specifically: Are there any proven methods or particular soft-close hinges that can be easily installed on Metod doors without having to completely replace the original hinge?
Additionally, I am interested in how to adjust the soft-close function so that the door closes neither too fast nor too slow and is optimally dampened depending on the weight of the front. Are there any special tips or settings I should be aware of?
I look forward to your experiences and advice, especially regarding the effort involved and the tools that might be needed.

Can you say something about the adjustability of the damping strength? Some hinges have very finely adjustable mechanisms, others only have a sort of fixed position. Good question! With IKEA Metod soft-close hinges, the damping function is indeed not very adjustable. This means:
- The damping is mostly preset and fixed.
- The commonly available adjustment screw usually only controls the door closing force, affecting how fast or slow the door closes.
- For finer adjustments, it’s better to look at branded products in the furniture fitting segment that offer more variability.
Important: In practice, the factory-set damping is usually sufficient if the doors are properly installed and there is no excessive weight.
I recommend making sure during installation that the hinges are perfectly aligned and the door is well adjusted. This minimizes abrupt closing much more than any damping adjustment.
Retrofitting soft-close can be frustrating if you’re not sure how the adjustment works. I had to figure it out myself – at first, my doors latched too slowly, which looked awkward.
My advice: Don’t get discouraged and adjust the screws in small increments. And if the door doesn’t close properly, definitely check the door alignment on the hinges. Otherwise, even the best damping won’t help.
Especially with Metod, you can really notice how sturdy the doors are, but also how important correct adjustment is.

I installed the IKEA Metod soft-close hinges on several doors. The trick is:
- Use the dampers only on hinges with tension springs
- Avoid blocking doors without load due to excessive damping
Also, check if the hinges are properly snapped in; otherwise, the damping will not work fully.

I was already aware that retrofitting IKEA hinges has some limitations. Since I want a consistent look, I’ll stick with the originals for now and try to fine-tune the adjustment.
What approach would you recommend for adjusting the closed door? Should I fully tighten the screw first and then slowly loosen it? Or the other way around? And is it helpful to adjust doors in different positions (e.g., half-open) as well?
