Hello everyone, I recently installed an IKEA Metod kitchen and am now facing the challenge of mounting the doors in a child-friendly and safe way. My main concern is that the doors are securely attached to withstand small children who might pull on them or bump into them, while at the same time avoiding hazards such as finger pinching or the doors unintentionally swinging open. Does anyone have experience with which installation methods, additional safety devices, or perhaps special hinges are recommended? I am especially interested in advice on retrofitting safety features without significantly altering the appearance or restricting the function. Thanks for your help!

I think that’s a good starting point. But how exactly do you define “securely fixed”? Are you referring to the door hinges themselves or additional reinforcements? Also, what about the internal specifications from IKEA – are the hinges designed to handle that kind of stress? For me, it would also be important to understand which type of child accidents you want to prevent: Is it more about protecting the door from mechanical damage or about child safety to avoid injuries?

To make the doors child-friendly, I recommend:
- Using soft-close hinges
- Installing child safety devices, such as door stoppers or locks
- Adding protective edge guards to corners and edges

This helps prevent loud slamming and finger injuries.

For the safe installation of IKEA Metod doors in households with children:

1. Check the hinge version: IKEA offers so-called soft-close hinges that ensure smooth closing. These significantly reduce the risk of injury.

2. Mounting points: Make sure the hinges are firmly secured to the cabinet carcass using appropriate wall plugs. The Metod cabinet panels are thin, so special fasteners are recommended to prevent ripping out.

3. Child safety locks: For additional protection, you can install small latches or magnetic catches inside the doors to prevent children from opening them unintentionally.

4. Spacers: To avoid finger pinch points at the door hinges, it is helpful to install door stoppers that limit the full opening of the doors.

What I would like to know: What type of children (age, activity level) should the furniture be made safe for? Especially with toddlers up to 3 years old, the risk is particularly high.

Good question! It’s mainly toddlers aged 1 to 3 years. They are very curious and often reach for things without thinking. I’ve already considered soft-close hinges, but I’m not sure if that’s enough on its own, since they can sometimes still open doors fully. The idea of magnetic locks sounds promising – how discreet are they, and how complicated is their installation? I’ve also thought about whether door dampers or stops could be used without completely replacing the doors.

For toddlers, magnetic child safety locks on the inside are very helpful. They are discreet, easy to install, and prevent children from opening doors without the magnetic key.

Additionally, I recommend fitting all doors with soft-close hinges and, if necessary, installing door stoppers that limit how far the doors open. This is simple and very effective.
