I recently started getting a KALLAX shelving unit from IKEA, and I noticed that some offers and reviews mention different quality levels. My specific question is: Are there different versions of the KALLAX shelving unit with varying quality, or is it always the same product with consistent workmanship?
I ask because I found both very positive and critical reviews online, some referring to the workmanship or durability. I’m interested to know if IKEA has different batches or production sites that really differ in material thickness, craftsmanship, or other characteristics.
Maybe some of you have experience with multiple KALLAX units or know more about possible quality differences? I would prefer not to buy a seemingly cheaper product that turns out to be hopelessly inferior. Thanks in advance for your insights!

The question of whether there are different quality levels for KALLAX is quite valid.
From IKEA’s perspective, the KALLAX shelving unit is generally produced as a standard product, meaning the specifications and materials are fixed and should be comparable worldwide.
However, with large manufacturers like IKEA, there is always a certain tolerance in production, which means slight variations in workmanship or material thickness can occur due to different manufacturing sites or production batches. It is not the case that deliberately different quality standards for KALLAX are offered in parallel.
The occasional differences reported by users often relate to the individual condition of the item (transport, storage, assembly) or to different retailer promotions (original vs. B-stock).
Conclusion: Officially, there are no different quality levels for the KALLAX shelving unit in terms of “various grades,” but minor variations can occur in individual units.

KALLAX isn't a solid wood cabinet; it’s made of pressed wood fiberboard with a laminate finish. You should be aware of that, and then the quality usually matches your expectations. Of course, there can be smoother or rougher edges or small irregularities, but overall you get exactly what you expect and want: a sturdy, functional shelf unit at a low price.
So I wouldn’t say there are different quality levels, but rather different experiences with handling and the occasional small flaws. 😊

Are there different quality levels of the KALLAX shelf, or is it always the same product with consistent manufacturing? That’s a good question, but I find the discussion about “different qualities” often lacks nuance. To be honest, many products vary slightly depending on the production location, supplier, and batch—that’s normal in the industry.
However, differences in quality for KALLAX are often not due to unusual manufacturing issues, but rather improper storage, transport, or assembly errors.
Also, it’s important to consider what you mean by quality. Some expect a flawless surface finish, while others don’t mind minor signs of use.
In short: whether “different qualities” exist depends on perspective. IKEA produces according to the same specifications, but the actual, perceived quality can vary. It would be helpful to specifically describe what bothered you—this way it’s easier to judge whether it’s a fundamental quality issue or isolated cases.
