Hello everyone, I have an issue with my Ikea Kallax doors, where the paint starts peeling off in several places after some time. The doors are about two years old and have been used normally, without exposure to moisture or heavy stress. The peeling usually begins at the edges or areas that are frequently touched. I wonder if this is due to the paint quality or if it has something to do with the surface preparation. Has anyone had similar experiences or advice on how to permanently fix this problem? I would also like to know if there are suitable refinishing options that protect against further peeling without damaging the appearance.

Better check whether the doors are really painted or laminated. Often, Kallax doors have a laminate that can peel off. If it is paint, repainting might help. Make sure to sand thoroughly beforehand.

The Kallax doors from Ikea are usually coated with a melamine or plastic foil rather than a traditional paint finish. Chipping typically indicates poor adhesion between the surface layer and the substrate. This can be caused or worsened by exposure to moisture or temperature fluctuations. Repainting requires careful sanding, removal of the foil, and possibly a primer; otherwise, the paint will not adhere well.

For a long-lasting solution, you can alternatively replace the doors with new wooden ones that have a proper paint finish. Alternatively, repair kits specifically designed for foil damage are available. It is important to minimize the underlying causes, such as moisture or friction.

Hi Tidudeo, I had the same problem. In my case, the edges were the most vulnerable because the film edges are sharp and more likely to peel off. My advice: if you don’t want to replace the damaged material completely, a fine sanding along the affected areas is enough. After that, I applied a thin layer of clear varnish to protect the surface. It is important to remove all loose parts and lightly roughen the surface before painting.

However, keep in mind that this is not a complete replacement for a new door, but rather a temporary measure to prevent further damage. Some users have also had success with special furniture repair pens or adhesive film patches that can be cut to size.

This is an important point that is often overlooked. If a plastic foil is actually present, conventional paint will not adhere well to the surface because these foils are usually very smooth and non-porous.

In such cases, I recommend using a primer and paint specially designed for plastics instead of regular paint. Beforehand, the surface should be lightly sanded with a very fine abrasive pad to improve adhesion. Alternatively, a high-quality furniture foil could be considered for re-covering.

If chipping occurs at the edges, it is also crucial to check whether the edges are damaged or if moisture is penetrating from behind. To increase protection, the edges can also be treated with a special edge protection varnish.
