ᐅ What is the best way to drill the holes for installing Ikea Metod cabinets?

Hello everyone, I am currently planning to assemble a new Ikea Metod kitchen system. Before I get started, I wanted to ask about your experiences: What is the best way to drill the holes for the Metod fittings? Specifically, I mean how to ideally mark the drilling points, which drill bit size is really suitable, and what to watch out for when drilling to ensure the holes fit precisely and the furniture is stable. So far, I have only partly used the instructions and noticed that there are often pre-marked points on the panels, but some spots seem to need to be marked individually. I am also interested in any recommendations you may have regarding drills and possible drilling guides to avoid mistakes. Thanks in advance for your tips!

For the holes, Ikea usually uses a 5mm (0.2 inch) wood drill bit, which fits the metal anchors. Mark the drilling points precisely using the included template piece. Use a drill with a depth stop to avoid drilling too deep.

This is essential. In general, it is recommended to follow the drilling templates provided by the manufacturer exactly, as the hole spacing is very precise.

Regarding drill size: a 5 mm (0.2 inch) wood twist drill bit is sufficient, as the dowels are always this size. A depth stop prevents accidental overdrilling.

Regarding the drill: if possible, a cordless drill with variable speed control and precise guidance is recommended. Special care is needed especially with thinner chipboard panels to avoid tear-out.

Additionally, it is helpful to reinforce the panel on the back side with tape before drilling, to reduce tear-out.

Exactly, that worked great for me too! It’s best to use a sharp drill bit; that makes drilling really easy.

One more tip: I always use a drill guide that looks like a small tube, which helps you drill perfectly straight holes every time ☺️

And don’t worry about the holes! With proper preparation, this will turn into a really nice project.

I’m happy to add some tips that are especially helpful when drilling for Ikea Metod:

- The drill points must be very precise because the dowels and fittings are positioned very close together. Therefore, start with a fine marking, for example using a pencil and a stop template.
- A 5 mm (0.2 inch) wood drill bit is standard. For pre-drilled holes, a dowel depth of 13 mm (0.5 inch) is usually specified.
- Use a depth stop on the drill bit to prevent drilling all the way through.
- A drill stand or at least a drill guide helps ensure drilling at a right angle.
- For particleboard, I recommend marking the spot from the front and applying some masking tape to the back. This prevents splintering of the material.
- If you don’t have a template, check the product description or the assembly kit for a drilling diagram, which you can copy onto cardboard or wood.
