Hello everyone,

I’m planning to furnish my very spacious bedroom with the Ikea Pax wardrobe system and am wondering which wardrobe dimensions work best for a large bedroom. My room measures about 4.5 x 5 meters (15 x 16.5 feet), and I want to maximize storage space while achieving a stylish integration without the wardrobe feeling too bulky or overwhelming.

I’m particularly interested in the ideal width, height, and depth of the Pax units to make the best use of the space while still allowing enough room to move freely. Do you have experience with the standard sizes (e.g., 50, 75, 100 cm (20, 30, 40 inches) wide; 201, 236 cm (79, 93 inches) high; 35, 58 cm (14, 23 inches) deep) and can you recommend which combinations work especially well in large bedrooms?

Also, how can multiple Pax wardrobes be flexibly arranged either pushed together or freestanding to create a harmonious look in the room?

Looking forward to your opinions and experiences!

For large bedrooms, I often use the 100cm (40 inches) wide and 236cm (93 inches) high Pax wardrobes. The depth of 58cm (23 inches) then provides enough storage space for clothing and more. It’s best to place two next to each other or arrange them in an L-shape – this looks good and makes efficient use of the space.

Your question is very good and important for planning, as the dimensions affect not only the storage space but also the visual impact in the room.

The Ikea Pax series usually offers the following dimensions:
- Widths: 50 cm (20 inches), 75 cm (30 inches), 100 cm (39 inches)
- Depths: 35 cm (14 inches, for example, for shirts and thinner clothing), 58 cm (23 inches, standard)
- Heights: 201 cm (79 inches), 236 cm (93 inches)

For a large bedroom like yours, approximately 4.5 x 5 meters (15 x 16 feet), based on my experience, here are some recommendations:

1. Height: 236 cm (93 inches) – the taller option provides storage up to the ceiling and prevents dust accumulating on top.
2. Width: 75 cm (30 inches) or 100 cm (39 inches) – 100 cm units are useful if the room allows, as they hold more contents and reduce the number of joints. 75 cm units are more flexible for smaller niches.
3. Depth: 58 cm (23 inches) – this depth is suitable for sweaters, jackets, and offers sufficient space for hanging clothes. The 35 cm (14 inches) depth is for more specialized uses but can be too shallow for bedrooms.

If you connect several Pax units, try to keep the heights the same for visual uniformity. When placing the wardrobes, it is advisable to install them along one wall as a continuous front to achieve a calmer room appearance. L-shaped layouts can create distinct zones but often have a stronger dividing effect.

One more question from my side: How high are your ceilings exactly? This is important because in very tall rooms, the standard height of 236 cm (93 inches) may look too low.

Thanks for the helpful hint. My ceiling height is 2.6 meters (8 ft 6 in), which is slightly higher than standard. This means that with 236 cm (93 inches) cabinets, there is a 24 cm (9.5 inches) gap to the ceiling. Therefore, I am considering whether to complement some cabinets with matching topper or filler solutions, or to leave the gap open to create a sense of airiness.

I find it problematic that there are no taller Pax wardrobes at Ikea. Does anyone know if combining them with custom-made toppers is a sensible and stable solution? Or are there alternative tricks to create a harmonious look in large bedrooms?

I want to avoid the room feeling chopped up or overcrowded with too many different elements. That’s why I’m also interested in how you have styled your Pax wardrobes in bigger rooms.

The ceiling height of 2.6 m (8 ft 6 in) that you described often presents a common challenge for standard Ikea Pax products. Since the cabinet height of 236 cm (7 ft 9 in) does not cover the full room height, I recommend:

- Making full use of the 236 cm (7 ft 9 in) height to maximize storage space.
- Optionally, closing any gaps above the cabinets with panels that Ikea also offers (such as extension panels or custom adjustments).
- If you really want to leave the gap open, ensure the top edges of the cabinets are finished cleanly and visually well designed so the space doesn’t look makeshift.

For large bedrooms, the following Pax combinations are especially reliable:
- Two or three modules side by side, each 100 cm (39 in) wide, 58 cm (23 in) deep, and 236 cm (7 ft 9 in) high.
- Alternatively, different widths (e.g., 100 + 75 + 50 cm / 39 + 30 + 20 in) depending on space and interior style to create variation.

When planning, pay attention to door openings and clearance space in front of the wardrobe; at least 60 to 80 cm (24 to 31 in) of free space should remain.

For stability, it is important to connect all modules (with clips, brackets) and secure them to the wall, especially for taller units.

If custom-made toppers are relevant for you: there are third-party solutions, but Ikea does not officially recommend these. Stability and appearance then need to be evaluated individually.

Summary:
- 236 cm (7 ft 9 in) height is a standard Pax dimension
- 58 cm (23 in) depth is ideal for bedrooms
- Width combinations of 75/100 cm (30/39 in) fit depending on the room
- Use panels or maintain a neat appearance for gaps
- Wall mounting and connecting modules is required
