Hello everyone,

I recently purchased a Billy shelf from IKEA and discovered during assembly that several screws were missing. It’s not just a single screw, but a whole pack with different sizes that are essential for the shelf. The assembly instructions don’t offer any alternatives, and without these screws, I can’t safely and securely put the shelf together.

My question to the community is: What is the best way to proceed if the screws are completely missing from an IKEA Billy shelf? Is there a defined process for replacement parts? Do I have to return to the store, or can this be handled through an online request? And what experiences have you had if components were missing?

I would like to know if IKEA is accommodating and how quickly such issues can be resolved. Thank you in advance for your help!

Hey Ercan, that’s really frustrating! 🙂 But no worries, IKEA is usually very accommodating and helpful.

I had the same issue with my Billy shelf; they sent me the missing screws by mail – and even free of charge! Just contact customer service or visit the IKEA store, they’ll take care of it right away. Hang in there, it will work out, and soon your shelf will be rock solid! 🙂

Simply go to the nearest IKEA, show your receipt and the missing parts. They will usually give you the screws directly.

Hello Ercan,

to assist you more effectively, it would be helpful to know exactly which screws are missing (size, type) and whether you checked if any screws were accidentally hidden inside the instruction manual packaging – this happens quite often with IKEA.

Basically, there are two common ways to resolve such issues with IKEA:

1. Return to the store: IKEA usually keeps replacement parts in stock, especially screws for standard furniture like the Billy bookshelf. You can bring the item back and request replacements, or

2. Online service: On the IKEA website, there is often an option to order replacement parts by request. This may take some time but is convenient.

Make sure to have your purchase receipt ready and specify clearly which product and screws you need. Sometimes calling the customer service number can help speed up the process.

Could you also let us know if the screws are completely missing or just not enough? And how did the packaging look – was everything properly opened and complete? This information helps in case we want to give you further tips on checking.

That’s a great tip. I’d like to add that IKEA often has a spare parts counter. If the store near you doesn’t have one, they sent me a package with all the missing screws directly – fast and hassle-free.

Important: It’s best to note the exact product number (found on the packaging or receipt), as this helps a lot when making inquiries.

If you contact support online, photos can sometimes be helpful (even if you didn’t plan to send any), but if you’re certain the screws are missing, usually just stating this is enough.

I know exactly how frustrating it is when you start working enthusiastically and then parts are missing!

This is exactly where trust in the retailer becomes crucial. Be sure to assert your claim firmly but politely.

If you notice that IKEA is not handling your case promptly, it can also help to explain directly in the store that this is a safety issue—especially with shelves that need to be fixed to the wall.

Please keep us updated on how things are going; I’m keeping my fingers crossed that it gets resolved quickly!
