Hello everyone,
I’m planning to install a new Ikea Pax wardrobe in my rather small bedroom. Since the room doesn’t offer much space, I’m looking for tips and strategies on how to best use and arrange the Pax system to maximize storage while keeping the room from feeling too cramped.
I want the wardrobe to be tall and narrow to keep the floor area open, but I’m unsure how to best combine the modules and which internal fittings make the most sense (e.g., hanging rails versus drawers, shelves, baskets). I’m also interested in advice on how to plan the wardrobe doors—whether hinged or sliding—in small rooms so they don’t get in the way.
Does anyone have experience with the Pax system in small spaces? What planning tips can you share for efficient use of space without overwhelming the room?
Thanks in advance for your help!

Hello Farse,
when planning PAX wardrobes for small rooms, it is wise to make the most of the room height. Ikea offers modules up to 236 cm (93 inches) tall, which significantly increase storage space without taking up floor area.
Regarding the interior layout: a combination of hanging rods (at least one higher rod for long garments and one lower for shirts/pants), drawers for small items, and open shelves works best for me. This keeps the wardrobe flexible and easy to organize.
For the door system, you should definitely choose sliding doors in small rooms. They do not require additional clearance space, making them space-saving while still easily accessible.
It is also important to measure the space carefully and fit the furniture perfectly to the wall or niche— even small deviations can noticeably increase the amount of space used.
If available, use Ikea’s “Pax Planner” – this tool helps with precise configuration.
If you can provide more details about the room, more specific advice can be offered.

Regarding door systems, you should definitely prefer sliding doors in small rooms. This is the most important advice. Swing doors require space in front of the cabinet.
Additionally, use the inside surfaces of doors for small storage solutions, such as hooks or small pouches.
Hello Farse,
I would like to add to the post because I have assembled PAX wardrobes in small rooms several times myself.
I can confirm that making full use of the room height is key, but you should also consider how often you will access the upper shelves. A small foldable step stool can be helpful if you plan to store seasonal clothing or seldom-used items at the top.
Regarding the interior fittings: personally, I combine different internal modules for small units—such as 50cm (20 inches) wide—to stay flexible. If the wardrobe becomes too wide, it quickly looks bulky and takes up too much space.
Consider staggering the elements in different depths (e.g., 35cm (14 inches) and 58cm (23 inches)) for a more dynamic appearance and practical use, if your room allows it.
Very important: think about the room lighting. A narrow wardrobe can quickly seem gloomy. There are LED strips you can attach inside, which makes finding clothes easier.
About the doors: sliding doors save space, but if appearance is important to you or you can place the wardrobe against a wall, hinged doors with flat handles might also work.
Feel free to get in touch if you have room measurements or photos, then I can assist you more specifically!

Summary and Recommendations for Assembling a Pax Wardrobe in Small Rooms:
- Maximize height: Aim for 236 cm (93 inches) or the room’s maximum ceiling height.
- Interior combination: Use hanging rods for long and short clothing, drawers for smaller textiles, and adjustable shelves.
- Doors: Prefer sliding doors, as they are much more practical in small spaces.
- Measure dimensions carefully to optimally combine standard modules and avoid gaps.
- Optional: Interior lighting with LED systems.
- Plan storage well, placing seasonal clothing higher up and everyday items within easy reach.
To optimize, consider a modular approach by planning a “trial setup” with shelves and hanging rods that you can adjust for your needs before placing a final order.
The Ikea PAX planner is an essential tool for accurate visualization and dimensioning.
In small rooms, combining PAX with additional storage solutions in the space can also be useful to improve organization and prevent overloading the wardrobe.
