ᐅ Replacing BILLY Shelf Furniture Handles – Compatible Models?

Hello everyone,

I am planning to replace the handles on my IKEA Billy bookcases to give them a more personal look. However, I am unsure which models are actually compatible. The original handles have standardized hole spacing, but I have read that not every handle fits easily because some might have different screw lengths or mounting methods.

Can anyone tell me what exactly I need to pay attention to when replacing the handles on Billy bookcases? Are there specific measurements, screw types, or particular models that work especially well? I would also like to know if there are alternatives that are easy to install without needing to drill new holes or make major modifications to the bookcase.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Can someone tell me if IKEA offers replacement handles specifically compatible with BILLY shelves?

Yes, IKEA provides various handle models compatible with the BILLY system. For example, check out the "FIXA" or "ENHET" handles, which generally have a standard 128 mm (5 inches) hole spacing.

What about the screw length for BILLY shelves with door fronts compared to BILLY drawers?

Typically, the screw lengths are very similar, usually around 30 mm (1.2 inches). If you have thicker doors, you will need to use longer or shorter screws. This can be easily adjusted using standard furniture screws available at hardware stores.

IKEA handles are reasonably good quality, but if you prefer a more durable look, I recommend metal handles from third-party suppliers. Just make sure to pay attention to the hole spacing.

Great topic! 🙂 A few months ago, I upgraded my BILLY shelves by simply replacing the handles with new ones from a furniture store. Important: really pay attention to the hole spacing!

The replacement was super easy, and the result looks very stylish—much more personalized than the standard IKEA handles.

My tip: try handles made of brushed stainless steel or matte black handles; they give the furniture a completely different character.

Looking forward to hearing how it goes after you change them! That’s really motivating! ;-)

Yes, they do, and the "FIXA" handles are usually compatible. Important: Measure carefully again, as IKEA may change the dimensions or have different versions over time.

That’s a great tip! Matte finishes are currently very popular and work well with the simple BILLY design.

One more note: If you have painted the cabinet doors or applied vinyl covers, check if the screws are long enough—this is often underestimated.

The best alternative handle options can be found on websites like Amazon or at hardware stores, often as handle sets with various screw lengths included.

This should definitely not be underestimated. Compatibility depends greatly on the production batch.

I think it’s important to carefully check the assembly drilling before ordering handles, otherwise the screws might not fit.

Also, I would like to hear in the discussion if anyone has experience with alternative fastening systems, such as clip-on or clamp handles. Are they practical for BILLY or just a gimmick? I tend to prefer the classic screw fastening.

Most BILLY shelves are designed for simple screw fastenings. Click or clamp handles are innovative but usually don’t fit due to the construction of the doors or the material thickness.

There is a risk that such systems may not hold properly or could damage the shelf.

If you’re looking for an alternative, I would recommend using traditional screws, possibly longer or shorter ones, to achieve more flexibility. 🙂

Clamp or click handles usually do not fit BILLY because the doors are too thin. Screw fastening remains the best solution.
