Hello everyone,

I recently assembled a BILLY bookcase from IKEA, but the door doesn’t seem to be properly aligned. It hangs unevenly and doesn't close flush. On closer inspection, I noticed that either the hinges are not precisely adjusted or the door itself might be slightly warped.

So, my specific question to you is: What exact steps would you recommend to realign a crooked door on BILLY furniture? I’d like to know if the issue usually lies with the hinges, whether you need to adjust wood or plastic parts, or if the door can be mounted differently.

Has anyone repaired a crooked door on a BILLY bookcase before and can explain in detail how I should proceed? It would be great if you could also point out possible causes to watch out for, so that after the repair the door closes cleanly without sticking.

Thank you in advance for your help!

I know that feeling all too well; it can be really frustrating when a door doesn’t fit properly. I had a very similar issue with my BILLY, and what helped me was completely loosening the hinge screws and then carefully realigning the door. Sometimes you might hesitate because you’re afraid of causing damage, but with some patience, it’s doable.

It’s also important to check that the door itself isn’t warped – this is rare but can happen with BILLY. If that’s the case, I was advised to hang the door incorrectly for a while so the material can “relax.” After that, you can properly refit it.

If you’re unsure, loosen the screws, align the door, and then only lightly tighten the screws at first. That way, you can make fine adjustments without stripping anything.

I hope this encourages you to give it a try yourself – it’s worth it! Feel free to share how far you get or where you run into trouble.

Hello Jalau,

I want to give you a comprehensive and structured guide since I’m quite experienced with furniture repairs, especially with BILLY furniture, and I usually like to go into detail with such issues.

1. First, observe carefully: “Is the door misaligned because the hinges are loose, or is the door itself warped?” BILLY uses simple but precise hinges that allow adjustment along three axes – vertical, horizontal, and depth.

2. Open the door completely and gently tighten the screws on the hinges. If the door sags at the top or bottom, check the vertical alignment. You can adjust the vertical screws on the hinges by loosening them and shifting the door up or down, or directly adjusting if the hinge type supports that.

3. For horizontal adjustments, there are usually screws on the side of the hinge that let you move the door closer to or further from the cabinet frame. This is especially helpful if the door is not flush with the side panel.

4. If the door is warped, sometimes removing it and laying it flat for about 24 hours helps. This can reduce minor deformations.

5. Finally, check whether the magnets or catches are properly engaged, as these often cause the feeling that the door doesn’t close properly even if the alignment is correct.

One more tip: especially with older BILLY shelves, the wood can sometimes expand or contract due to moisture – here it helps to remove the door and check for damage or warping.

If you have exact model numbers, I can also find the appropriate instructions or exploded diagrams for you, so you can see exactly where each screw is located.

How about your tools? Do you have the right screwdriver (Phillips or Torx depending on the hinge) to make precise adjustments?

This is the key point. Slightly loosen the screws on the hinges, then align the door sideways, and finally tighten them.

This is exactly the best approach. Afterwards, simply check if the door closes flush.
