sin_lauHello everyone, I want to install LED lighting in my Billy shelves but have some concerns regarding installation and potential issues. Specifically, I am interested in how to best mount LED strips or LED light bars without visible cables or difficulties with the power supply. I also want to avoid damaging the shelves during installation or having the LEDs malfunction later due to excessive heat or insufficient power source. Who has experience with this and can provide a step-by-step explanation on how to install LED lighting in Billy shelves smoothly? Maybe also some tips on recommended products, suitable connection methods, and possible pitfalls. Thanks in advance!
Honestly, most people worry way too much about installing LED lighting in a BILLY shelf. Sure, the shelf is inexpensive, but there’s not much there that can get damaged. Visible cables? Who doesn’t use cable channels nowadays or run them through a power strip inside the shelf?
Most just stick the LED strip’s adhesive tape underneath and that’s it. If someone feels unsure about dealing with electricity, maybe they should consider using battery-powered LEDs and skip all the hassle. It’s really not that complicated.

I think it’s a great idea to install LEDs in BILLY shelves! 🙂 I recently did this myself and I’m really impressed.
My tip: buy 12V LED strips and definitely use a power supply! I attached the strips under the shelves with clips and secured the cables with cable clips. This way, they are barely visible and the whole setup looks much more high-end!
Don’t be afraid of the wiring – you can do it, I promise! Just be confident and take it step by step.

For factual clarification: For a clean LED installation in BILLY shelves, I recommend using 12V LED strips connected to a suitable power supply with sufficient capacity. The wiring should be routed through cable ducts or clips to avoid visible cables and maintain the overall appearance.
Heat generation is generally not a concern, as the strips produce little heat, but the adhesive surface should be clean and free of grease to ensure a lasting bond. To prevent damage to the shelves, avoid using screws and instead use adhesive fasteners or special clips.
Also, make sure to correctly connect the polarity and check the orientation of plugs and power supplies to avoid short circuits.

A small tip from me: Before installing the LEDs, it’s important to check whether the shelves have sufficient stability, especially if you plan to add extra weight from a power supply or a power strip. With BILLY shelves, this is usually not an issue, but it’s worth considering in advance.
I also recommend cutting the LED strips precisely to size and sealing them properly, especially at the cable ends, to prevent short circuits inside the shelf.
