Hello everyone, I want to install LED lighting in my Billy shelves but have some concerns regarding installation and potential issues. Specifically, I am interested in how to best mount LED strips or LED light bars without visible cables or difficulties with the power supply. I also want to avoid damaging the shelves during installation or having the LEDs malfunction later due to excessive heat or insufficient power source. Who has experience with this and can provide a step-by-step explanation on how to install LED lighting in Billy shelves smoothly? Maybe also some tips on recommended products, suitable connection methods, and possible pitfalls. Thanks in advance!

How did you route the cables through the shelf without them being visible?

I usually use slim cable ducts that can be attached to the inner edges of the shelves with double-sided tape. This works well because they are hardly noticeable, and the cables stay securely in place.

Alternatively, it helps to run the cables at the back of the shelf, behind the back panel, so they aren’t visible from the front. This requires a small hole in the back panel or using the gaps between the back panel and the wall.

I mostly used narrow cable ducts

Cable ducts are also highly recommended because they allow you to keep the cable routing under control at all times.

Another tip regarding back panels: Some users partially remove the back panel or modify it to conceal the cables. This works particularly well if you want to turn off or service the lighting later without having to dismantle the entire shelf.

Thanks in advance for the great tips! I especially find the advice on clean gluing and the use of cable ducts helpful.

I think I will start with 12V LED strips, as the power supply seems to be the simplest option. One last question: Is there anything special to consider when cutting the LED strips, or can they simply be cut at the marked points? And is it advisable to additionally insulate the ends if they are left exposed?
