Hello everyone,

I recently bought a Pax wardrobe from Ikea and now I’m wondering about the best way to attach the handles to the doors. The doors already have pre-drilled holes, but I’m unsure which screws to use and how to mount the handles properly so they don’t become loose later or damage the doors.

It would also be helpful to know if there are special recommendations for different types of handles – for example, bar handles versus knob handles.

Is there a particular order to follow? How much torque should be applied when tightening the screws?

I’m looking forward to your tips and experiences, especially from those who have already assembled the Pax and installed the handles themselves. Thanks in advance!

For attaching the handles to the doors of the Pax wardrobe, there are some precise steps I can recommend based on experience:

- The doors of the Pax wardrobe come factory-drilled with holes that exactly match the standard dimensions for Ikea handles.

- Use the screws provided with the handles, as their length and diameter are optimally matched. If no screw is included, M4 screws with a length of 25 mm (1 inch) are recommended for standard doors.

- Screw the handles in from the inside of the door, as the screws create an internal thread in the door there.

- Tighten the screws firmly by hand, but avoid applying excessive torque to prevent the wood from splitting.

- If different types of handles are used (e.g., knob handles), the same dimensions and procedures apply; only the handle design varies.

Summary: Simply insert the screws through the pre-drilled holes, hold the handle in place, and secure it from the inside with the appropriate screws. Fix the door on a stable surface to prevent any slipping.

This is an important point. I would like to add that if you want to install different handles, you should definitely check whether the mounting holes match. Otherwise, you will have to drill new holes – but be careful not to drill too close to the edge to avoid cracks.

It is also worth doing a test run before installation: Lay the door horizontally on a solid surface, position the handle, and temporarily insert the screws. This way, you can see if everything fits and focus on tightening later.

If you’re worried about applying too much pressure when tightening, placing a small rubber buffer or washers between the handle and the door can help – this distributes the force and protects the material.

And when the doors are already installed, make sure the screws are easily accessible and that you don’t slip with the drill. A sturdy screwdriver or a cordless drill with adjustable torque is ideal.

I understand your concern; installing handles can seem a bit intimidating at first. I’ve developed a routine that works well and helps avoid annoying wobbling:

- First, loosely attach the handle with both screws to ensure all holes align properly and nothing is crooked.
- Then, gradually tighten the screws, alternating between them to ensure the handle is evenly secured to the surface.

Screws should be tightened just enough to hold the handle firmly without squeezing the wood. If you feel resistance or notice changes in the door’s appearance (e.g., pressure marks), it’s better to loosen the screws slightly.

I also recommend checking all handles again after 1-2 days, as wood and screws can settle slightly due to changes in climate. This way, you can avoid having to tighten them later under pressure.

Wishing you success with the installation!
