ᐅ Is it necessary to have LAN cables installed in the garage?

Hello
I wanted to ask what the essential use for a LAN connection in the garage would be?
Our electrician is reluctant to install a Cat cable in the garage.
He is charging twice as much as for a Cat cable inside the house (€500 in the garage) just for a Cat socket.
Why do you absolutely need LAN in the garage?
Wallboxes usually all support Wi-Fi anyway.
We are also planning to install photovoltaic panels later on.

So should we not skip the CAT socket in the garage? Personally, I wouldn’t skip it. You never know what it might be useful for in the future.

Do wallboxes always have to be connected to LAN? No, they don’t have to be. For example, we have a Zappi from myenergi. It connects via a wireless hub that is installed directly in the utility room (of course, this depends on the distance between the garage and utility room).
However, there are also models that have a LAN port. It really depends on what kind of wallbox you want.

FrankChief11 Sep 2022 13:33I would install a maximum of one LAN cable in the garage.
In the garage, you can add more LAN ports with a switch if necessary.
Possible use cases for LAN in the garage:
- potentially a wall box (EV charger)
- running a LAN cable to the garden/garden house
- access point on or inside the garage wall for the garden
But the access point in the living room near the patio door should have enough range to cover the garden adequately.
We have a KFW55 house.

For 500 euros I would definitely skip it; if there is power available, a Wi-Fi repeater should be sufficient in the future.
Unless you plan to set up a server farm for Bitcoin mining later on. It really depends on the house.
For a low-budget option, I would also skip it and try to find another solution or maybe do it yourself.
For a higher-end home with a stylish garage, I definitely wouldn’t give up on having LAN, unless it’s right next to the utility room and the issue can be quickly fixed with a drill. 😉
Definitely run a LAN cable to the garage. There are already many applications today (photovoltaic inverter has not been mentioned yet), and there will be even more in the future.
Whether your access point is sufficient for the garden depends on the direction of the signal and the size of the garden. I would actually want to make sure that coverage is adequate. So it’s better to install a cable there as well.

FrankChief11 Sep 2022 14:12Our garden measures 11 x 20 m (36 x 66 ft).
The photovoltaic inverter will be installed in the basement in the utility room.
I would say our house is in the low to mid-budget range. Naturally, I want to save as much as possible so that the money saved on unnecessary items can be invested in other things.
If we need to run the cable through the garage to avoid potential problems, then we would do that as well.
