ᐅ Is it necessary to have LAN cables installed in the garage?

Hello

I wanted to ask what the essential use for a LAN connection in the garage would be?

Our electrician is reluctant to install a Cat cable in the garage.

He is charging twice as much as for a Cat cable inside the house (€500 in the garage) just for a Cat socket.

Why do you absolutely need LAN in the garage?

Wallboxes usually all support Wi-Fi anyway.

We are also planning to install photovoltaic panels later on.

But it doesn’t really matter, he’s not lowering his price for the patch panel.

He just offered us an alternative: instead of the patch panel, he would install keystones everywhere, and then we would just connect directly from the switch to the keystones. It’s a bit cheaper—10 ports for €250.

He charged internal prices for CAT duplex in the garage (as a goodwill gesture), €220 for duplex.

We will also have CAT duplex cabling installed in the garage.

Do we really need LAN in the bedroom? I can’t think of a use case right now.

The Wi-Fi access point will be on the same floor in the kids’ room.

Keystones are more expensive per port to buy than “cheap patch panels.” You can simply snap them into an empty keystone frame later. And does he really want to leave them “dangling loose”? Goodness, how incompetent or disrespectful is that electrician?

Bedroom = TV (but of course that can also be done via Wi-Fi).

Install keystones everywhere. There are also patch panels that directly accept keystones.
In the bedroom, only for a TV or an access point at most.

Not for sleeping, no. But some people put a TV in the bedroom, or an internet-enabled radio alarm clock, or a computer, or... As I mentioned yesterday, I would definitely install it in the living room, offices, and for access points. Everything else is a matter of different levels of luxury—you have to decide what you need.

I don't understand these questions like "do you need" or "do we need" at all. Why should an outsider answer what YOU need? What do you expect to gain from that? Someone will answer "yes," another will say "no"... and then what?

I understand the question very well. When building for the first time, you certainly won’t have all the options and use cases in mind. Asking for experiences and recommendations here is exactly the purpose of a forum.

Yes, we are using keystone jacks and then placing them into a frame inside the network cabinet.

I have attached our floor plan.

We have installed CAT Duplex outlets in the following rooms:

1x Living room behind the lowboard
1x Room 1 behind the lowboard (desk will be next to it) - children's room
2x Studio - one duplex outlet on the left and right side of the window each (desk and lowboard for TV and console)
1x Garage

Room 2 = walk-in closet and Room 1 = bedroom
At each CAT Duplex outlet, a satellite cable has also been installed, except in the garage and in the living room, where a twin cable has been used.

No TV is planned for the bedroom (we want to try not to have a TV in every room 😀).

I just want to rely on your experience so I don’t make any mistakes.
