ᐅ Is an interior garage depth of 570 cm sufficient for future cars?

Hello everyone,

we are currently planning to build a double garage with a storage room and are unsure about the interior depth of the garage. Unfortunately, we cannot build endlessly (due to site coverage ratio, etc.) and have therefore considered an interior depth of 570cm (224 inches) as a compromise. Do you also find that sufficient for cars? Of course, more space is always better, but that’s not the question here.

I couldn’t find any information about vehicle lengths with the tailgate open. For example, a Skoda Superb Combi is already 486cm (191 inches) long, and with the trunk open, it’s certainly about 30cm (12 inches) longer. Then I need space to load, plus about 14cm (6 inches) in front to avoid hitting the wall. That leaves approximately 70cm (28 inches) for loading. With a stroller and so on, I suspect it will get cramped in the garage, although I haven’t tested it yet.

What has been your experience?
Thanks

Thank you for your many responses. I am not concerned about the width or other dimensions of the garage, but as mentioned at the beginning, only about the depth/length. Everything else works well for me; only the interior depth of 570 cm (224 inches) seems tight but feasible based on what I have read. Attached is a sketch.

Floor plan of a garage with two parking spaces (each 5.00 x 2.45 m / 16.4 x 8.0 feet); total area approx. 35.99 m² (387 sq ft)

Quite tight,
the lower car has to be driven in forward, the upper one backward if the driver wants to exit through the door, and then the stroller might pass through without scratches, but not from the rear for loading.
Cars with mirrors are about 2.20m (7.2 ft) wide and they are getting wider.

Yes, very humorously planned: the hallway next to the cars ends before you can get past them ;-)

We have an interior width of 5.5m (18 feet) and a length of 5.6m (18 feet 4 inches); the new Smax just fits in. The second small car is always parked reversed in the garage. Bicycles hang on the wall. Unfortunately, we couldn’t fit more due to spacing. But at least 1m (3 feet 3 inches) of clearance on each side would be ideal.

I don’t understand why you’re being so blunt in your two posts, as I’m trying to explain everything as thoroughly as possible and gather opinions. Your posts aren’t helpful in this way, sorry. I would also prefer a larger garage, but as I said, I have to comply with the floor area ratio and other regulations, so this is a compromise between width, depth, and a small storage room.

You mean 5.5m (18 feet) width and 5.6m (18 feet 4 inches) length/depth? That’s similar to mine (5.7m (18 feet 8 inches) length x 5.3m (17 feet 5 inches) width internal dimensions). Could you maybe take a photo and show how it looks, or send it to me via private message? (Please obscure the license plates). Can you still load the Smax from the rear when you park it all the way forward in the garage?

You enter from the right side? A 70cm (27.5 inches) path width is quite tight if there’s a wall on one side. That’s less than the width of a standard door opening. You can’t hang anything on the walls, otherwise it won’t be enough space. No winter tires, ladder, etc. Also, this assumes you always park very precisely. If you park just 20cm (8 inches) too far forward once, your pants will get dirty.

Does the car have a tow hitch? You should add about 30cm (12 inches) extra to the length in that case.

What do you do when you have luggage? Groceries, sports bags, things like that. Do you carry everything around the garage or unload in front of the garage and carry it through?

I see two ways to improve this:
1. Fully close the garage on the right side and always enter through the gate from the left. Then you can even hang items on the wall if you want. You’ll just have to walk around the garage each time.
2. Replace the garage with a carport. Without walls, those 20cm (8 inches) at the front and back don’t matter much. Maybe the saved floor space can be used to create a bit more width.
