ᐅ Carport/Garage Width – Is 2.50 meters sufficient, or is that too narrow?

Hello everyone,

In addition to the 4-meter-wide (13 feet) garage, we are planning a carport for a second vehicle. Together, we have a total of 6.5 meters (21 feet) available for the garage and carport, but our main focus is on the garage since we don’t have a basement and need storage space.

So, width is the limiting factor here. Unfortunately, for the carport, we can’t exceed 2.5 meters (8 feet) in width, with a length of 6 meters (20 feet). The carport will be located between the garage and the house, so it will be enclosed by walls on both sides.

Is 2.5 meters (8 feet) wide enough for a carport, and is it still reasonably practical to get in and out of the car there? Or would it be better to skip the carport altogether?

Do you have any other suggestions?

We are not very broad people in the household, and the vehicle is a Golf 7.

Thank you very much for your help.

Our carport is 3.50 meters wide (11.5 feet), and my wife drives an A3… If you want to get in and out on both sides, I consider this the minimum width.

Even so, she often hits the door against the wall (house on the left, garage on the right). I have already installed protection there.

Our garage is 5.50 meters wide (18 feet); after subtracting the walls, about 5.00 meters (16.5 feet) remain. The car takes up about 3 meters (10 feet) of that space, and there are also three bicycles next to it. Getting in and out is still possible, but the storage space is better suited to the depth.

So, I find 2.50 meters (8 feet) for a carport and even 4.00 meters (13 feet) for a garage to be tight. After deducting the walls, the available interior width is only about 5.50 meters (18 feet), as far as I know.

Why not build a double carport with space for storage in a shed at the back?

Then there are only 2.50 meters (8 feet 2 inches) left for the carport

My prediction:
You will always be annoyed by the tight space and the awkward way of getting in and out.

That will indeed be the case, I completely agree.

It would be better to share the available width, with an open space in the middle without any restrictions.

We cannot build wider because of the heat pump and the ventilation system.
And where do they extend into the width of this building complex?

According to the builder, on the page about the carport/garage, the outlet of the indoor air-to-water heat pump would be located there, and air as cold as -10°C (14°F) could circulate. This air needs to be able to move away from that area to avoid condensation and, consequently, mold on the exterior walls.
