ᐅ Carport or Garage: Which Makes More Sense?

I am currently planning a solid masonry carport for a new build. Initially, I decided against a garage door because I find a carport simpler. You can just drive in and out without having to open a door. Since I won’t be storing anything valuable in the carport, I didn’t see the point in having a garage door. The charging station in the carport can be switched on and off from inside the house, so misuse is ruled out.

What do you think? Are there good reasons for a garage door that I might have overlooked?

If that suits your usage better, then go ahead and build it as a carport. However, I would recommend planning the opening wide enough so that a garage door could be installed later. Check with the market leader Hörmann to see the clear opening dimensions they require for their different door sizes.

Something I’m not familiar with:
What are the advantages of having an electric car in the garage during cold weather?

Thanks for the reply!
Parking or charging an electric car in cold temperatures is not a problem at all.

Where is the carport supposed to be located? Are the usual 5 meters (16 feet) parking space in front of a potential garage being observed?

If your main concern is easy access for driving in and out, then installing an electric garage door with remote control is a great solution. It works very well.

The carport is located directly next to the house, with exactly 5 meters (16 feet) of paved driveway space in front.

Then there’s nothing against installing the electric gate.

Our neighbors now want to install gates in front of the carport so that no one can see when both cars are gone.
We think it’s good when at least one vehicle is visible when present, as it creates a more lived-in appearance.

There are always pros and cons. It just has to suit the owner.

Just having a garage is advantageous because of martens alone. You can also do some DIY work there without getting cold, or change tires, etc.

They are actually not comparable at all. A garage offers a completely different added value because it is a proper building. A carport is just a covered parking space.

If possible, I would always build an enclosed garage. It provides storage space for car accessories, bicycles, gardening tools, Christmas decorations, luggage, and more if there isn’t enough room inside the house. You can set up a small workshop... The car is better protected (moisture is not an issue in a well-constructed garage), and especially in winter, you avoid having to scrape ice off the windows.
