ᐅ Basement or garage, or a basement with an integrated garage

Hello,

My wife and I are currently finalizing the detailed planning of our house.
We are trying to figure out what would be the most cost-effective option for us.

We plan to build a house of about 9.5 meters by 11 meters (ground floor approx. 85 sqm (915 sq ft)).

Our main question is how to approach the issue of a basement, a garage, or a basement with an integrated garage. The plot has a slight slope—about 2 meters (6.5 feet) height difference from one end to the other.

1. Would building a basement be more economical for us, considering that we might need to install foundations due to the slope?
2. Is a double garage built with an insulated roof structure ultimately about the same cost?
3. Does it make sense to integrate the garage into the basement? It doesn’t necessarily have to be a double parking space.

If we decide on a separate double garage, we would probably need a slab of about 170 sqm (1,830 sq ft).

This is the last major decision we need to make soon. Can anyone help who has faced the same dilemma?

Since my wife runs a part-time hairdressing business, we could plan a room for that purpose, so the clients wouldn’t be inside the house. The technical equipment could be placed in the basement, and so on—that would make sense. If so, I would like to include a spacious single garage and build a carport outside for the second car.

For the layout (even roughly, just regarding the room program), I would start with the living floors. The basement layout often derives from that, including the proportions.

Just as an additional point: Without a basement, a utility room is needed on the ground floor. With the same house size, this means you would have more actual living space, or with the same living space, a smaller house...

I don’t quite understand the approach. If the decision about whether there will be a basement or not is supposed to be made "last," that means to me that the rest of the floor plan is already final. But as Robbaut mentioned, a house needs to be planned somewhat differently without a basement than with one. Could you please explain what exactly has already been decided for you?

I would also be culturally inclined to draw that conclusion – however, it is becoming increasingly common to design the living space layout independently of this and to add a basement not simply beneath the house in the traditional way, but rather as a large extension at the rear of the garage (or alternatively the carport).

We have Plan A “with basement” and Plan B “without basement.”
The plan with the basement obviously has smaller exterior dimensions than the one without.
My main concern is whether I can save money by building a larger garage with storage space in the attic, or if it’s better to go with a basement.
A difference of about €10,000 (around $11,000) shouldn’t influence the decision. However, if the sloped site means I’m “forced” to install foundations, retaining walls, or similar structures...
then a basement might actually be cheaper than an expanded double garage.
I don’t think I can make a decision without a soil survey first.
