ᐅ Is an interior garage depth of 570 cm sufficient for future cars?

Hello everyone,

we are currently planning to build a double garage with a storage room and are unsure about the interior depth of the garage. Unfortunately, we cannot build endlessly (due to site coverage ratio, etc.) and have therefore considered an interior depth of 570cm (224 inches) as a compromise. Do you also find that sufficient for cars? Of course, more space is always better, but that’s not the question here.

I couldn’t find any information about vehicle lengths with the tailgate open. For example, a Skoda Superb Combi is already 486cm (191 inches) long, and with the trunk open, it’s certainly about 30cm (12 inches) longer. Then I need space to load, plus about 14cm (6 inches) in front to avoid hitting the wall. That leaves approximately 70cm (28 inches) for loading. With a stroller and so on, I suspect it will get cramped in the garage, although I haven’t tested it yet.

What has been your experience?
Thanks

I’m not concerned about the width or overall garage size, just the depth/length as mentioned at the beginning.
Looking at the sketch, length seems to be your least concern. Loading without opening the garage door will only work if you park in reverse and have the trunk facing the door.

Or should I understand your sentence to mean that you don’t mind all the scratches from the stroller on the sides of the cars? Because you will get plenty of those if you park both cars nose-in. The problem is not the length but the width of the garage. The Superb is 2.04 m (6 ft 8 in) wide — so if you park two of them inside, you will have a serious space issue.

I remember it being common to load the car with the garage door open. Or to simply drive the car out of the garage for a trip. I must be old 😳

Me too. And that’s the only scenario I can picture. When you’re loading the trunk, you’re hardly going to keep closing the door behind you all the time. You need enough space to move freely. Also, anyone who has to get back into the house without going through the garage would want to have barrier-free access back to the garage, even if there is a side door open.

Does the car have a trailer hitch? You can easily add around 30cm (12 inches) to the length for that.

Men! 😀

I once redrew this in CAD and added cars. If you park well (yes, very perfectly here), you can also easily pass through between the cars in the middle. One compact car and one Superb as an example; this combination will always remain (I currently drive an SUV and not a station wagon). Most of the time, one car will be parked outside anyway. This is, in a way, calculating the worst-case scenario.

Two large cars were never planned anyway. If we win the lottery and own two large cars, we would immediately build a new house where the conditions allow for a larger garage 😀

then you are also the one who paints the colorful lines in our parking garage,
start practicing parking and unparking with the mirrors folded in.
But do it, these are your cars and your garage.
My father-in-law had the same, and not a single undamaged metal part was left on his two-year-old car.

Now draw the cars as they are actually parked. Anything else is just self-deception.

Two large cars are not planned at all. If we ever win the lottery and own two large cars, we would build a new house that allows for a bigger garage 😀

Why is there a door on the right now?
The first sketch says BRH90.
Describe how you get into the garage. Through the house (right), through the equipment room (top left), or still through the open garage door? 🙄

And when the family comes home with the SUV/station wagon, at least the passenger needs to exit the car outside the garage. The same applies when leaving.
