Hello

Are there good retrofit smart home systems available?

We bought a semi-detached house as a new build from a developer.

The electrician declined to work with KNX and said he is not familiar with it and won’t do it.

My question is: Are there good retrofit options for smart home systems that don’t require opening up the walls (that is not an option)?

Which systems would you recommend?

Functions:

Light control
Window sensors (preferably invisible)
Shutter control
Music control
Video doorbell

It should definitely be possible to create scenes and rules.

I’m also open to other suggestions for useful functions I may not have thought of yet.

I use Z-Wave for door and window contacts as well as temperature, humidity, and motion sensors. PTZ cameras are connected via LAN (PoE). Roller shutters (Somfy), which unfortunately use the proprietary io-homecontrol system, have been disconnected from the Somfy cloud using a Velux gateway. Household appliances (oven, cooktop, etc.) are connected via Wi-Fi, but that’s mostly for experimental purposes. Everything is integrated into HomeAssistant running on a Raspberry Pi 4. Here, you can configure scenarios, automation, and IFTTT.

Do you just pour flour and milk into the oven and it turns into a cake? 😀
What do you do with things like that, “that nobody really needs?”

And is the house heated using the waste heat from the servers?

What kind of prejudices are there against a server?
In a single-family home, there is no data center. A larger switch for a mid-range network distribution actually generates more waste heat.

Our oven and steam oven are networked through Bosch. It’s great to put the potatoes in the steam oven or the casserole in the oven and start it while jogging so the food is ready on time. I really like that!

Exactly! With enough equipment (multiroom AV, servers, networking technology, etc.), a fair amount of heat is generated. In summer, it goes outside through the bypass, and in winter, it passes through the heat exchanger. This way, the waste heat is not lost. If all this is located together in a standard utility room along with the heating system and photovoltaic equipment, it adds up to a significant amount of BTUs 🙂

When the heating demand of a house reaches the triple-digit watt range, the heating installer should consider the number of planned PCs in their calculation. Otherwise, it can quickly become too much 😉
