Hello

Are there good retrofit smart home systems available?

We bought a semi-detached house as a new build from a developer.

The electrician declined to work with KNX and said he is not familiar with it and won’t do it.

My question is: Are there good retrofit options for smart home systems that don’t require opening up the walls (that is not an option)?

Which systems would you recommend?

Functions:

Light control
Window sensors (preferably invisible)
Shutter control
Music control
Video doorbell

It should definitely be possible to create scenes and rules.

I’m also open to other suggestions for useful functions I may not have thought of yet.

I also find Loxone interesting, but one problem with Loxone is that if the company ever goes bankrupt, I would have to replace all the cables and tear down walls.

That is the biggest criticism.

Why... Tree, Free@home, KNX, and even the quick bus from Comexio all use the same cables. And even if Loxone does go bankrupt, which is very unlikely at the moment, the system will continue to work and the secondhand market is huge.

I thought Loxone Tree has its own cable

It’s basically just 2x2x0.6 mm (approximately 24 AWG) and 2x1.5 mm² (approximately 16 AWG). KNX uses 2x2x0.8 mm (approximately 20 AWG), but that’s about it. Especially since the Tree bus is much faster than KNX.

However, KNX cable works just fine for Tree as well; you just need a separate 24V power supply line for the LEDs.

It does, and although it is not officially certified for KNX, it should still work. You may need to pay attention to the cable length, as the conductor cross-section of the data wires is smaller than that of KNX.

Since Loxone does not offer a price advantage compared to KNX, why choose it at all?

Loxone has good marketing... period.

No cost advantage, but definitely added value... mainly because the possibilities are far greater than with KNX and much easier to implement.

Otherwise, KNX also requires a server, and if that fails, it's game over.

You’ve never really worked with Loxone, have you?
