Hello

Are there good retrofit smart home systems available?

We bought a semi-detached house as a new build from a developer.

The electrician declined to work with KNX and said he is not familiar with it and won’t do it.

My question is: Are there good retrofit options for smart home systems that don’t require opening up the walls (that is not an option)?

Which systems would you recommend?

Functions:

Light control
Window sensors (preferably invisible)
Shutter control
Music control
Video doorbell

It should definitely be possible to create scenes and rules.

I’m also open to other suggestions for useful functions I may not have thought of yet.

I don’t have exact details about the electrical installations yet,

but I expect that in the standard setup, the cheapest options will be used for everything.

Roller shutter motors (basic ones that only operate by button press).

I have not yet settled on a specific manufacturer.

Which manufacturers would you recommend for Z-Wave devices?

As a central control unit that could connect everything, I found Homee, but I’m open to better alternatives.

I look forward to suggestions for options I might not be aware of.

of course, Somfy also offers “dumb” motors that can be controlled by any actuator.

Of course, that’s why it’s just an example… Somfy is a common name that many recognize… But nobody knows yet if or which motors will actually be used. I know some general contractors who install radio-controlled motors in large numbers because they are cheaper overall, as this saves additional hours for the electrician. However, the homeowner ends up at a disadvantage because they get stuck in a vendor lock-in situation.

Yes, that’s the crux of the matter.

The most affordable standard varies with each building technology.

But yes, I would look into Z-Wave, as it probably has the greatest potential right now.

That’s actually a good thing!

None at all! Because that’s exactly the wrong approach—to commit to just one manufacturer. This goes against everything the term “smart home” originally stands for and means.

Of course, nowadays the term is so overused in marketing and advertising that most people think it just means some colorful lights and smart plugs plugged into outlets, and maybe thermostats with internet access… and then the smart home is done.

You will more or less have to rely on multiple hubs from several manufacturers.

OK, I will first try to figure out which wireless standards I want to use, possibly even combining several.

EnOcean is used when there is no power connection available.

What is the difference between Zigbee and Z-Wave?

What about KNX-RF? That is the KNX wireless standard—should one possibly go for that?

Wi-Fi is actually ruled out.

They are two different wireless standards, one more proprietary and the other more open. The specifications are constantly changing and can be found with the respective alliances.

KNX-RF is intended as a supplement. Building an entire house with it is challenging.

The wiring also needs to be suitable. With conventional wiring as typically provided, you won’t get far.
