I am currently planning a solid masonry carport for a new build. Initially, I decided against a garage door because I find a carport simpler. You can just drive in and out without having to open a door. Since I won’t be storing anything valuable in the carport, I didn’t see the point in having a garage door. The charging station in the carport can be switched on and off from inside the house, so misuse is ruled out.

What do you think? Are there good reasons for a garage door that I might have overlooked?

If that suits your usage better, then go ahead and build it as a carport.

However, I would recommend planning the opening in advance so that a garage door could fit later on.

Take a look at the market leader Hörmann to see the clear opening sizes they require for their various door dimensions.

When you are traveling by car on vacation or on the road, a burglar can immediately see that the carport is empty. The closed garage door at least suggests a risk that a car might be inside.

Where is the carport supposed to be located? Are the commonly used 5 m (16 feet) parking space in front of the potential garage being maintained?

If your main concern is simply convenient entering and exiting, then installing an electric garage door with a remote control is a great solution. It works perfectly.

A carport is better because ventilation is improved; in a closed garage, moisture cannot escape as easily. Just for your information: a garage door for a double garage or double carport costs around 2400 Euro. I also built a carport measuring 7 x 7 meters (23 x 23 feet), with the roof overhang it is 8 x 8 meters (26 x 26 feet).

Personally, I would always prefer a garage over a carport. Especially if it’s going to be built with masonry anyway, I would also install a door.

In a garage, you can temporarily store other things without worrying about them being stolen. You can also keep bicycles inside without the risk of theft.

But ultimately, only you can decide what you want. I would definitely build it in a way that makes it easy to add a door later on, in case you eventually realize that having a door would be better.
