ᐅ Carport or Garage: Which Makes More Sense?

I am currently planning a solid masonry carport for a new build. Initially, I decided against a garage door because I find a carport simpler. You can just drive in and out without having to open a door. Since I won’t be storing anything valuable in the carport, I didn’t see the point in having a garage door. The charging station in the carport can be switched on and off from inside the house, so misuse is ruled out.

What do you think? Are there good reasons for a garage door that I might have overlooked?

We have also left the garage open at night or accidentally left the key in the lock outside overnight.
Our side door to the garage was also completely unlocked for several years.
None of this was an issue with the people living in the residential area.

However, this changed somewhat after houses were broken into on two nights in a row.

The people living next to you are actually quite unlikely to break into your home :-)

No, if you had a carport, that obviously wouldn’t have been possible – huh? Does that then lead to statements like:

“Sorry kids, we can’t set up the air hockey table because we have a carport” or “Oh man, if only we had a garage, we could set up the air hockey table now” or “If I had a garage, I could build the cabinet”

Your statement is nonsense.
Garage closed – table stays in place. With a carport, you might have to fold it up and put it away, or you risk having two tables there the next day.

By the way... no, it’s not considered living space. It’s neither heated nor used as living space in any way. Just dry, covered, lockable, and in summer, 95% ready to be used as a double garage within a very short time.

Exactly. That’s why the neighborhood doesn’t really matter, no matter how safe you feel. The risk is always there that a group of thieves might move through the area.

Disadvantage of a garage door:
1. Cost
2. Time it takes to open the door electrically. In my opinion, negligible if electric.

Advantage
1. The car is better protected. Especially martens are really annoying.
2. No leaves, dirt, etc. blow inside. This is particularly a problem with enclosed carports.
3. If I want to store something there, I can do so without worry.

Can be added...

We have a garage with a door leading into the house and think it’s great... but everyone is different.

I want to take a moment to speak up in favor of having a garage in any form. In the past, I parked my car on the street and constantly faced problems: minor accidents, dirt, AND those martens!! They were the most annoying issue. When we built our own home, it was clear to me right away: there had to be a lockable garage next to the house! A carport was out of the question.

@Seppl90 already summed it up well: there are certainly pros and cons to having a garage or a garage door, but for me, the advantages clearly outweigh the disadvantages. I would also add that it’s possible to use the garage as an enclosed space for events, for example.

Since we had really great experiences with our concrete garage, I can only recommend it. Take a look at the many offers from garage manufacturers. Nowadays, there are also very affordable, simply designed garages available. I can recommend our garage manufacturer REKERS – a top provider from the north!

What do you think? What have you decided so far?
