Bought a house, estimated the renovation budget plus 10-15% for inevitable extras, and we set aside 5000 EUR for the kitchen!!!!

That’s how it started... at first, I was in a bit of shock, but we still had time. First step: remove all the walls for a new layout—I need space...

Let’s start with the (according to the agent) move-in ready property. The small kitchen, just under 8 square meters (about 86 square feet), had its 1970s pass-through removed. The wall including the kitchen door is gone! The wall next to the cellar stairs is gone too! Actually, the entire slanted wall, nearly 7 meters (23 feet) high, removed completely...

The window had to go as well since we needed a different working height than the standard 90 cm (35 inches). New screed installed, we switched to underfloor heating, all electrical wiring and water pipes are new.

After almost six months, the realization slowly sank in: the kitchen budget will not exceed 5000 EUR, so we had to look for a used kitchen... something special, but very cheap.

The search criteria: within a 100 km (62 miles) radius, up to 1000 EUR, because I still want new appliances.

Looks good :-) What kind of flooring do you have? Pandomo or something similar?

I have a question about the lighting: Is that the "Lucide SIGMA" above the island? If so, are you satisfied with the quality, light output, etc.? (It’s one of my top choices for part of the kitchen)

That is a Molto Luce Lens Double PDI DALI, and it gives fantastic light. 111W and 11,480 lm 😀
The only downside so far: The individual shades around the lenses attract dust like crazy, and as soon as the light is on, they look really dirty...

Exposed concrete floor. After a quick check on what Pandomo is: Yes, something along those lines. Pandomo seems to be simply a brand name from a supplier. It might differ slightly, but basically it’s the same principle.

I have been a member of this forum for about a year now and, among other things, I have been observing kitchens and bathrooms.

What stands out to me:
The rectangle has become the standard shape.
At first, I don’t find this either bad or good.
There is definitely room for “new ideas,” but at first glance, they all look very similar.
No, not everything needs to be reinvented or redesigned. The question is: Is this done because it’s genuinely comfortable, or simply because “that’s how it’s supposed to be”?
It reminds me of Japanese design, and the Japanese are at the top of my “masters of design” list.
Still, I remain somewhat puzzled.
One reason for this surprise is that I feel when life happens in such a kitchen, the design idea tends to get lost…
Personally, I find the whole thing TOO angular and boxy, but I admit it “has something.”

Part of my wonder may also come from assuming that most of the kitchens and bathrooms shown here (from what I have seen) tend to be in a higher financial bracket. The space they usually require is generously sized.
This has always been a good foundation for comfortable architecture.

… just wanted to share that :-)

I believe that the square standard design and the relative similarity are also products of the current times. Kitchens are certainly very personal, but everyone uses the same modular system, which ultimately limits the variation somewhat.

With today’s prices for custom-made solutions or options that are not off-the-shelf, it can be quite overwhelming. Since the modular system already offers a lot, not many people can or want to spend two to three times more for a truly individual solution.

Fits the house very well – it wouldn’t be my personal living style, but I find it quite chic and consistent.
A bit like a classic “prime-time crime drama set in an affluent environment” 🙂

For a house like this, I find the shape fitting – it only looks awkward on a 60m² (645 sq ft) row house plot.
