ᐅ Walk-in shower: What is the recommended width for the entrance?

Hello forum,

once again, we need your collective expertise. Our shower measures 1.40 x 1 meter (4 ft 7 in x 3 ft 3 in). The entrance is planned on the 1.40 meter (4 ft 7 in) long side. Since the quote from our plumber for a glass panel/door seems too expensive, we are wondering if a walk-in shower would be enough?

We understand that some splashing may occur. However, we have sufficient slope for drainage, and a small towel in front should be enough.

How wide should the shower entrance be? 70 cm (28 in) ↔ 70 cm (28 in), or would 80 cm (31 in) – 60 cm (24 in) be better? Currently, we have an old corner shower with a 40 cm (16 in) wide entrance.

Good luck

The splashing doesn't bother me with the showers, but without a door, I always feel cold due to the draft.

Wall heating takes care of that! 🙂

In general, I would make sure that a standard wheelchair can pass through.

We have a 70cm (28 inches) passageway. That’s how we planned it, and we don’t need more.

What was much more important for us was the maneuvering space inside the shower itself.

I believe you don’t need a wheelchair-accessible doorway. Either the entire house is designed to be wheelchair accessible, or it isn’t. Such a glass wall can be replaced quickly.

Many people previously had doors 73cm (29 inches) or 61cm (24 inches) wide in their apartments, and nobody was bothered by it 🙂

I would also recommend 70 cm (28 inches) to you. I believe that is the standard for this. If the current dimensions fit, then 70 cm (28 inches) is a good solution. A wheelchair-accessible opening is of little use if the entire house is planned that way. In that case, the turning radius in the shower is more important.

We have wall heating everywhere, yet there is still a draft in the shower, which I find uncomfortable. The shower is also "only" 140 cm long (55 inches). 🙂

A movement area of 1.4 x 1 meter (4.6 x 3.3 feet) is given. A 70 cm (27.5 inches) (glass wall) and 70 cm (27.5 inches) (entry) layout is therefore acceptable. The issue with the steam column is a significant drawback, though. But maybe this will help me stop taking long showers :p
