Hello,

we still have a small portion of the contingency buffer left for a little extra feature.

We have the choice between the following two options, and we want to pick one:

- Exterior venetian blinds (also called louvered blinds) on two fixed floor-to-ceiling window units next to the front door (south-facing, no roller shutters, frosted glass). Cost including control system and wind sensor is about 1350€ (approximately $1,450).
- Fingerprint scanner on the front door. Total cost is about 1200€ (approximately $1,290).

We are having a hard time deciding. Both have advantages, and we could also choose to skip both if needed.

What would you choose?

Fingerprint! Unfortunately, I didn’t do it, but I would have liked to; it somehow slipped my mind. I’m not a fan of the office-like look (=venetian blinds).

We also have a fingerprint lock, but I always keep a key with me just in case. If my fingers are wet or dirty, the fingerprint sensor doesn’t work. Since my fingers aren’t always in “top condition” after walking the dog, I find it too risky. After gardening, washing the car, or other tasks, you often can’t use the fingerprint sensor, or it’s faster to just use the key because you first have to get a dry, clean finger.

Best regards,
Sabine

I recommend choosing a model with a slightly higher price that supports both Bluetooth (app) and NFC. This way, you can issue NFC tokens to visitors or register existing ones. For example, I already have a token from work that I’ve authorized in the fingerprint reader. This also works well when your fingers are dirty.

External venetian blinds in front of opaque glass? I’m having trouble understanding the reason for opaque glass facing south and then putting blinds in front of it.

Okay, so what exactly is the main advantage of a fingerprint lock? I don’t get it. If I still have to carry a key anyway because it only works every third time, then you might as well just install a regular lock, right? Or am I missing something?
