ᐅ Two external blinds or fingerprint scanners – which would you choose?

Hello,

we still have a small portion of the contingency buffer left for a little extra feature.

We have the choice between the following two options, and we want to pick one:

- Exterior venetian blinds (also called louvered blinds) on two fixed floor-to-ceiling window units next to the front door (south-facing, no roller shutters, frosted glass). Cost including control system and wind sensor is about 1350€ (approximately $1,450).
- Fingerprint scanner on the front door. Total cost is about 1200€ (approximately $1,290).

We are having a hard time deciding. Both have advantages, and we could also choose to skip both if needed.

What would you choose?

You are free to take a key with you. We no longer carry any. Everything is done via fingerprint or key card.
Why? Convenience. No scratches on the door from locking it. You can’t forget or lose your fingers, but you can with keys.

That doesn’t mean there can’t be a (power-free) emergency mode or cases where the traditional key is more practical.

No one dies if there is no fingerprint scanner on the door – just a nice-to-have, not a must-have.

Venetian blinds in front of opaque glass? I can’t quite understand why opaque glass facing south would be combined with Venetian blinds in front.

It is frosted glass. There are two fixed window panels next to the front door, facing the street directly. I don’t want passersby to be able to look inside, but we also need sufficient natural light there.
Our property faces north.
Frosted glass is indeed opaque but does not keep heat out.

Thank you very much for your opinions. We have decided on the Venetian blinds. They will only be used when it makes sense during summer. I expect them to bring a great added benefit then.

For south-facing windows, use external venetian blinds. Every ray of sunlight that does not hit the glass on warm sunny days helps maintain a comfortable temperature inside the house. Unless you live on a hilltop, wind sensors are not necessary with these dimensions.

The elements are located right next to the front door? Hmm, it will definitely be interesting to see at which level the external blinds (or “raffstores”) are supposed to operate there. It’s not like a window, where they run on rails inside the reveal. Hmm.
I also missed earlier that these are opaque windows. The frosting lets in much less light than most people expect beforehand (I’m a known opponent of satin-finish glass!). Whether using external blinds is still worthwhile in this case… hmm.

We don’t have blinds, but we do have a fingerprint scanner, which I wouldn’t want to miss anymore. It’s just very convenient, and a few times the scanner has been really helpful when our little kids accidentally locked me out of the house.

Okay, so what is basically the main advantage of a fingerprint lock? I don’t get it. If I still have to carry the key because it only works every third time, wouldn’t it be easier to just install a regular lock? Or am I missing something?

Well, it’s convenient and there’s no risk of locking yourself out by closing the door behind you. Children can use the fingerprint scanner without the risk of losing a key.

Best regards
