Hello everyone

The topic of "glass patio roofing" has already been discussed several times in this forum. It has become clear that such a glass roof only works well in summer with external awnings/shutters; otherwise, it gets unbearably hot. So far, so good.

Now, to all owners of such glass roofs with external shutters: how comfortable is it actually to sit under the glass roof with the shutters down during the (peak) summer? Is there really no heat buildup? Or does it still become unbearable under the glass despite the external shutters?

Our architect is currently strongly advising against a glass roof because it seems that—even with external shading—it is hardly bearable underneath during summer. He recommends a gravel roof instead.

For me, however, the advantages of a glass patio roof with sun protection shutters are obvious:

  • No darkening of the living room due to fixed shading (wood/gravel roof), especially in winter.
  • Extremely flexible: without lowered shutters, it is still comfortable to sit underneath on colder (sunny) days (which is hardly possible with a wood or gravel roof because it simply gets too cold without direct sunlight).

What do you think? Many thanks for your experiences.

PS: As an alternative, for example, a louvered roof could be installed for shading. This is said to be waterproof, and in peak summer the louvers can be easily adjusted horizontally to let warm air escape at the top, preventing heat buildup underneath. Does anyone have experience with this? I would be very grateful for any input.

Best regards

Thank you for your tips.
I have now compared all the suppliers, roofers, and metalworkers, and the most affordable provider for ALUMINUM is venomenaal.de. For almost all combinations, they are about 50-200€ cheaper than the next cheapest competitor.

We placed an order there last night, and I will report here about the service and installation.

This year, I installed two patio roofs, both as kits—one from Home de Luxe costing about €1000 (approximately $1100) and one from Palram around €1400 (approximately $1550), including shipping to Austria. Both are approximately 3 x 5.50 meters (10 x 18 feet) in size. The cheaper roof had a plastic twin-wall sheet only 6mm (1/4 inch) thick, which is not really suitable for snow loads. The open edges need to be sealed separately! The assembly instructions were okay, but the installation was still a considerable effort.

Palram also has differences between models: the Feria model has a snow load capacity of 150 kg/m² (31 lb/ft²) and wind resistance up to about 120 km/h (75 mph), while the Sierra model has lower ratings. The plastic twin-wall sheet here is 8mm (5/16 inch) thick and, importantly, is welded all around, preventing dirt from getting inside. Additionally, there is a lip along the longitudinal side that simply snaps into the profile—very clever!

For someone unskilled but with some technical understanding, the assembly time is slightly over 6 hours on a finished foundation. Installing the twin-wall sheets takes about 40 minutes. It looks good, is stable, affordable, and quick to assemble. Delivery was from the Netherlands.

ESCO Vario roofs are only made with polycarbonate panels, Vario Kilgast also only with multiwall sheets, Rogner roofing, and Profi louvered roofs.

We also decided on a terrace roof with an aluminum frame and glass. Size: 4m x 6m (13 ft x 20 ft)

Features:
  • Under-roof awning
  • 2 vertical awnings on the south side (2 x 3m) (2 x 6.6 ft)
  • 1 vertical awning on the west side (1 x 4m) (1 x 13 ft)
  • 9 LED spotlights integrated into the rafters, switchable in 2 lighting groups
  • All awnings and LED groups controllable by remote and compatible with our Somfy home automation system
  • Complete installation including foundation construction
  • Building permit/planning permission service

Price: €22,000

Not cheap, but excellent advice with a great showroom and very high-quality products!

The building permit (required for depths over 3m (10 ft)) has been approved, and installation is scheduled in about 5 weeks. I will keep you posted!

We received a much higher offer, but without LEDs and only 5.50 m (18 feet) wide. Which brand is your roof from?
