Hello everyone,

Are both paintable wall liner and plastering equally suitable for a new build, or is there anything to consider?

Are there significant cost differences between paintable wall liner and plastering?

I would appreciate hearing about your experiences.

I didn’t think the question would come across as silly as it apparently did to you. Sorry!
Of course, I know these are different things and also look completely different. I just heard that painter’s fleece is especially suitable for new builds because of settlement cracks, and I wasn’t sure about textured plaster. I like both...

We have a new build and simply had our plaster painted. Using painter’s fleece would have cost about 4000 EUR extra. I think it looks very neat. The surface is somewhat rough, though. The ceilings also have no fleece—just the concrete painted white. The joints were, of course, properly filled beforehand. Everything looks perfectly smooth! I hope this helps you.

That's how we did it too.
But we already have some settlement cracks upstairs. If I had the money, I would use that fleece on the upper floor.

We will only have the plaster (the first layer applied by the plasterers) sanded and then painted. It is smooth enough.

We do not want fleece; we don’t mind settlement cracks, they are part of the process, and perhaps I want to know exactly where the settling occurs.

After about five years, or so, when repainting, the cracks can be painted over and that will be fine.

We don’t want fleece; we have no problem with settlement cracks, they are to be expected and maybe I even want to know where the building naturally settles.
After about 5 years or so, when repainting, you can simply paint over the cracks and that’s it.

That was our mindset as well. The plaster looked good at the time—authentic as plaster, relatively smooth. We just painted it.
Then settlement cracks appeared.
Not really a problem. But in our opinion, 5 years is too short a period before needing to repaint. Overall, everything still looks good except for the cracks, which the mason has now filled in. Now we have light-colored filler spots on colored walls.

That’s obviously unfortunate. We only have two painted walls in the house, so I’m not too worried about it.
