Hello, I would like to get your opinion on our floor plan. Maybe I can still incorporate some ideas, since this is only a draft for now. The north side is located in the back left corner of the living room, in case anyone is wondering. We basically provided the initial layout ourselves, and the architect then added the finishing touches. I have a few small changes in mind—for example, the garage door should be half a meter (about 20 inches) wider. Maybe some of you could share your thoughts.

Sunny regards,
subsb74

No, you’re not coming across as irritated at all. If anything, it’s the others. Don’t worry about it.
I like the floor plan! The fact that it’s this spacious matches your preferences, so it’s completely reasonable. Whether a door is 20cm (8 inches) to the left or right... I always think with such advice: I’ve never entered a house and thought, “Wow, that door should’ve been moved half a meter.”

P.S. For proper cross ventilation, having more than one window is beneficial.

Hello, Bautraum!

Why we designed the floor plan the way we did is not something others could have known from the start. That’s why questions were asked, which I answered.

When I then receive the following suggestion,

Why don’t you build two showers down there in the room, so you can shower together at the same time 😎

and am accused of being unreasonable in the same post, I can’t really understand that. What is the point of that? If someone doesn’t agree with my views, I’m fine with that. I also respect everyone’s opinion. I haven’t personally attacked anyone here.

At least I hope not.

Best regards,

You were asking for advice and ideas, so here are some (not from me, but from others), and you explain your plans.
Even if Bautraum thinks you didn’t sound annoyed, others have read it that way. Some words and phrases are simply used only when you feel personally or your project is under attack.

And yes, I can also make extreme suggestions – I think some of them fit your explanations 😉
In the end, it’s about individual planning; there’s no real need to debate a standard. A standard is just the starting point; then come details and personal touches that make it your own.
No hard feelings: you will certainly feel comfortable in your house since you think it’s good. To each their own.

@Bautraum2015 ... yes, the floor plan looks clear and well-organized at first glance. But that’s not the main point here. This forum isn’t about sugarcoating things; it’s about sharing personal experiences. Also, there are a few users here, including myself 😉, who are very interested in floor plans, who don’t just look at the first draft or plan their first apartment, and who have always been interested in living situations and similar topics.

That’s why a second look is important, and of course this includes details like door positions, window placements, possibilities for furnishing a room, and so on. Often these aspects aren’t considered carefully enough, and later you find yourself standing in your large—or in many cases much smaller—rooms realizing that proper furnishing is actually quite difficult.

Sharing ideas for alternative layouts and similar options is also one of the goals of this forum. Ideally, the checklist from the pinned thread is filled out, so the living situation can be assessed better. It also saves repeated questions—for example, there still isn’t a site plan provided 😉 .

As I said, I would design the upper floor differently, considering that the 18/20-year-old children are about to move out. But I have already mentioned that. And I would definitely determine the kitchen space VERY carefully based on an actual kitchen design plan 😉.

So it’s about taking a second look, which naturally includes things like door positions, window placement, possibilities for furnishing a room, and so on. Often these details aren’t considered closely enough, and later you find yourself in a large—or in many cases much smaller—room, realizing that proper furnishing is hardly even possible.

Sharing ideas for alternative layouts is also a goal of this forum. Ideally, the checklist from the pinned thread is filled out, which helps to better assess the living situation. It also avoids the repeated questions—like, there’s still no site plan, for example 😉 .

I want to make it clear that nobody here needs to sugarcoat anything for me. The goal is to share experiences, which is good.

I would like to say that I am a self-employed furniture maker and consider myself by no means inexperienced in space planning. I have to manage both well-planned and catastrophically planned spaces—that’s how I and my employees earn our living. So I can share MY experiences here just as well as anyone else.

I often deal with floor plans that are over-engineered to death, where the space ultimately becomes poorly optimized. And that only happens because maybe a two-meter (6 feet 6 inches) walking distance is reduced or 20 square meters (215 square feet) of living area is saved to cut costs.

It’s completely clear to me that doors and windows are not just nailed anywhere in the wall. I fully agree with you on that. Our plan hasn’t reached its final version in that regard, either.

Because I will be making the furniture myself later on, that part is already pre-planned. I already know what goes where and what will be stored in each piece.

So, about the kitchen! Our shared favorite topic, kbt! 🙂

I plan, build, and install about 20 to 25 kitchens per year, so I’m quite experienced in that area.

You mentioned that the distance from the countertop run to the island feels too large to you. That’s okay. Personally, it doesn’t bother me. It’s about 150 cm (60 inches), which I find quite suitable. As you can see, our personal preferences differ here. But that doesn’t mean one of us is more right than the other. It’s a matter of personal preference.

On the other hand, the distance between the tall cabinet block on the left and the island seems almost too narrow to me—while for you it might be just fine.

In general, I am a fan of neat, straight layouts, which our design certainly reflects. Maybe this is because I often see terribly cramped and awkwardly divided houses. That’s not to say smarter layouts don’t exist—there definitely are smarter designs than ours.

I think many by now are quite tired of supporting someone who is asking for help, advice, or opinions here in the forum, putting effort into detailed, helpful replies, only to then learn additional important information in the post after next.

Sometimes, when reading a thread, I think: Most users here have almost no experience at all! For the original poster, a topic like this can potentially turn their entire house planning upside down—in their favor! That’s why those few minutes of effort should definitely be invested. Normally, it should be in one’s own interest to provide as much information as possible; that’s what the pinned posts are for.

To make it short: For a young family, the floor plan is probably one of the better ones here. For a *retirement home*, people here understandably see it differently. By the way, you would have been told that starting from post #2.
