Hey,

I received the quote today from the general contractor for the interior staircase builder regarding the final treatment of the stairs. Additionally, I’m considering using metal balusters (quote for that is still pending). Now I’ve been thinking about experimenting a bit with the balusters. Either the standard wooden balusters, or metal balusters for an extra cost, or a mix of both. For example, alternating one wooden baluster, then one metal baluster, and so on.

There’s also the option to mix within each baluster: for example, wood on the top and bottom with a short metal section in between, or the other way around, metal top and bottom with wood in the middle.

What do you think? Is mixing like this a bad idea, or can it work, or...?

Thanks for your feedback!

Phew, I can’t really say how long or how many rods there are. It’s from the ground floor to the top floor, with a ceiling height of 2.50 meters (8 ft 2 in). A quarter turn, 15 risers. A 1.1-meter (3 ft 7 in) balustrade.

I also have metal rods in the railing of the wooden staircase and a round handrail. The staircase is beech wood, white waxed. My "preferences" regarding the railing cost about the same; for the waxing, I paid around a 10% surcharge. It’s great because it’s not as slippery as painted stairs—you actually don’t slip.

You really have to let that sink in

Money is cheap

I would try using the paint stripper from Metabo. The Bosch PRR 250ES is also a great tool for work around the stairs ...and the best part: Both together cost less than a new stair tread
