Hey,

I received the quote today from the general contractor for the interior staircase builder regarding the final treatment of the stairs. Additionally, I’m considering using metal balusters (quote for that is still pending). Now I’ve been thinking about experimenting a bit with the balusters. Either the standard wooden balusters, or metal balusters for an extra cost, or a mix of both. For example, alternating one wooden baluster, then one metal baluster, and so on.

There’s also the option to mix within each baluster: for example, wood on the top and bottom with a short metal section in between, or the other way around, metal top and bottom with wood in the middle.

What do you think? Is mixing like this a bad idea, or can it work, or...?

Thanks for your feedback!

I like this one. We’re not building a new house but have bought an existing property and would like a new staircase because the old one cannot be sanded down properly.
I have requested a quote for a wooden staircase from Poland. There are a few relevant websites. Does anyone have experience with this?

Metal or wooden rods were freely selectable. Do as you like. The staircase was sprayed with clear acrylic lacquer as well. White would have been an additional cost, but he didn’t want that either because he said if we install white, it will definitely get scratched and need repainting, causing extra hassle and fuss. In the end, nothing would be left from that, or you just add a significant surcharge right away, which he would have done. I didn’t ask about blue, yellow, orange, or striped options.

Is an additional cost of about €280 gross for metal rods instead of wood a fair price? I’m missing a bit of a sense for this. For a quarter-turn staircase with approximately 2.80m (9.2 ft) of railing in the attic, or from the ground floor to the attic under the handrail.

I think it’s okay. We were supposed to pay 400€ back then. With Nordlys, it was included right away... You’re exactly in the middle.

The additional cost for wood to stainless steel with us is approximately €165.

@desixtor sounds very affordable. What is the scope of your staircase? Is it just a straight flight with no extras, or does it also include a railing up to the wall in the attic? Or to ask differently, for how many balusters?
