Hi everyone,

What is the best paint to use on lime plaster? We will have lime plaster throughout the entire house.

Maybe there is a painter among you who can give me some advice or even recommend a paint.

Hello Marcel,

I’m not a painter, but we faced exactly the same problem. We also have a lime-cement plaster throughout the house. A painter friend recommended a paint from Brillux – Kalisil 1909 (it’s relatively expensive, but it preserves the breathability of the plaster). Are your walls finished to a Q3 or Q4 level? There is also a breathable primer available from Brillux for this paint.

The usual suspects like Sto, Caparol, Keim, Kreidezeit... Everyone has a different philosophy. I would buy my paint from the painter or a specialist paint retailer anyway, and especially pay attention to coverage and washability.

Lime and lime like each other 😉

Many years ago, on a farm in Lower Bavaria, I painted a room with lime paint (because lime paint had been used there before).
At some point, the sunlight came in and the paint glowed so beautifully and brightly that since then I have “adored” lime.
That’s why we also plastered our house with lime plaster and painted it with lime paint...

BUT:
The lime paint was extremely expensive, had a rough surface (which I dislike), and some of the buckets contained thousands of clumps (which the painter didn’t pay attention to)... also, sunlight always shines into our house here, but I have never noticed that “glowing effect” here...
Lime paint used to be cheap and the surface can be smooth.

You often read that lime paint is something really great... my experience is mixed and lately quite frustrating. But even today, I don’t really know where the problems come from or what you need to watch out for to avoid them.

Keim Innostar maintains the open-pored nature of lime plaster and has a pleasant white color that is not too bright. It is also easy to apply and offers very good coverage and hiding power. I painted our entire house with it (one coat of diluted primer, one coat of finish paint) and am very satisfied. Pure lime paint sometimes tends to chalk.
