Hello

We are currently in the final phase of our house construction. We have now realized that our window sills cannot be painted in the window color, or according to the architect, the paint will not hold.

The plan was to have window sills made of anodized aluminum. On closer inspection, I am no longer sure if they are actually made from this material. They look more like some kind of "stone."

What types of window sills are there?
How did you manage to get them in the right color?

Thank you very much for your feedback.

Hello Narilo,

The most common material for window sills is aluminum; it is lightweight, easy to shape and join, and corrosion-resistant (especially due to anodizing). Various colors are achieved through different anodized finishes. Standard colors include gold/brass, light and dark bronze, black, and natural aluminum color. Red, yellow, green, and blue/violet are generally possible as well, but are very rare for window sills; this will affect the price (special colors) if you choose such a color. All anodized finishes have a metallic appearance, meaning they do not look like painted or powder-coated window components.

Powder coatings in any color are another option to color aluminum window sills. This is also durable; aluminum windows are often colored this way. This makes it possible to have aluminum windows and sills in the same color shade.

With wood or plastic windows, it is more difficult to achieve a matching color tone because the different coating methods stand out in the material—painted wood looks different from powder-coated aluminum.

Additionally, window sills are available as precast concrete elements, masonry, wood (not very durable), or wood-plastic composite materials.

That’s exactly why I prefer aluminum window sills, since they are very weather-resistant and can be installed quickly and easily by yourself.
Concrete just looks ugly 🙂

I don't like concrete either, and I also have window sills made of aluminum. They are very durable and can be replaced quickly.

That depends. The advantage of aluminum is the price. We have window sills made of natural stone, and we use these both inside and outside. Outside, they match well with our windows, and inside, they are decorated with exotic plants.

I really like window sills made of sandstone. Aluminum is okay, but in my view, natural materials are more durable, even though they are more expensive.
